Ovex Family Pack of 4 Thread Worm Treatment

What is mebendazole and what is it used for?

Mebendazole is the active ingredient in this threadworm treatment called Ovex. It is a single dose medicine used in adults and children to treat threadworm of the intestines.

Mebendazole works by starving the worms in the gut of glucose, which they need to thrive. The treatment kills of the worms, but doesn’t destroy their eggs. The eggs can survive for up to two weeks outside the body, so it is often recommended that the whole family is treated to help avoid recurring infections.

A common symptom of threadworm is an itchy bottom or vagina, particularly at night.

Threadworm is sometimes called pinworm, and is very common in children. It can spread easily to adults and other family members.

Instructions on how you should take this medicine

This treatment contains 100mg mebendazole per tablet and is suitable for most adults and children over the age of 2. The pack contains 4 single dose tablets.

It is important that you only use this treatment if a threadworm infection has been confirmed.

The dose instruction for adults and children over 2 years of age is one tablet per person. The tablets are for oral use only, and can be chewed or swallowed whole with water. For young children, the tablet may be crushed to ease swallowing.

Do not exceed the stated dose. The treatment will not be more effective if the dose is doubled.

What you need to know before taking mebendazole

This medicine is not the right treatment for you if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or if you are allergic to any of the ingredients listed on the pack or the information leaflet. You should talk to your pharmacist or doctor who will recommend an alternative treatment.

A common side effect is stomach pain, while more uncommon side effects include diarrhoea and wind. Rare side effects that have been reported include unusual hair loss, dizziness, convulsions or allergic reactions. You’ll find more information about side effects in the patient information leaflet.
