What is Nizoral Shampoo?

Nizoral Shampoo is a medicated shampoo designed to treat and prevent dandruff. It helps to reduce itching, redness, and other irritating symptoms of dandruff while helping to clear your scalp within just 4 weeks. It's ideal for anyone over the age of 12 who is suffering with dandruff and needs a way to keep their hair and scalp clear.

Why do I have dandruff?

People can develop dandruff for lots of different reasons, but it usually isn’t harmful. When you have dandruff, the skin of your scalp will begin to dry out and flake, causing the white or grey flakes of skin in your hair that are the tell-tale symptom of dandruff. Some of the most common causes of dandruff include:

  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Contact dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Ringworm
  • Cradle cap in babies

How will the ketoconazole in Nizoral Shampoo treat my dandruff?

Ketoconazole is the active ingredient in Nizoral Shampoo, and it works as an antifungal medication. It works by combating a natural yeast on your skin called Malassezia, which is thought to be more common in those who suffer with dandruff, helping to return the natural balance to your skin. It also helps to reduce the redness, inflammation, and itching you can experience when you have dandruff, making you feel more comfortable.

Can I use this product if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

Nizoral shampoo is suitable for use during pregnancy or while you’re breastfeeding. However, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using any medications during this time to be sure it’s the best thing for you and your baby.

Can I use this dandruff shampoo if I’m using other medication?

If you’re using any other medication, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. If you are using any steroid creams to treat your dandruff (such as betamethasone or hydrocortisone), you should begin to use it less over 2 – 3 weeks as you start to use Nizoral shampoo. We’d recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist before doing this to make sure it’s the right course of treatment for you.

Does Nizoral cause hair loss?

Hair loss is one of the side effects of Nizoral, as this product can affect your hair follicles, causing inflammation that can lead to hair loss or change in your hair texture. However, this side effect is uncommon, affecting less than 1 in 100 people who use this shampoo.

How to use this shampoo

Wet your hair thoroughly and then apply a small amount of Nizoral Shampoo and work it into a lather using your fingers. Leave the lather on your scalp for 3 – 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. If you have particularly thick hair, wash with your usual shampoo before using Nizoral. Use this product every 3 – 4 days for 2 – 4 weeks. If you need to wash your hair more often than this, use your regular shampoo rather than using Nizoral more often. After 4 weeks, you can continue to use this shampoo once every 1 – 2 weeks to help keep your skin clear of dandruff. If your dandruff has not cleared after 4 weeks of using this product, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

When should this product not be used?

Nizoral shampoo is not suitable for use in children under the age of 12. Do not use this product if you are allergic to ketoconazole or any of the other listed ingredients. For external use only, avoid contact with eyes or other sensitive areas. If you get any shampoo in your eyes while washing your hair, bathe them gently in water.

Does Nizoral Shampoo have any side effects?

Like all medications, Nizoral Shampoo can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience any of the following side effects, you may be having a severe allergic reaction and should stop use and seek medical assistance immediately:

  • Swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing, wheezing

Other side effects you may experience include:

  • Skin reactions where you applied the shampoo, e.g. itching, irritation, blistering, redness, dry or tender skin, burning sensation
  • Inflamed hair follicles, hair loss, changes in hair texture
  • Increased tear production
  • Skin rash, dry skin
  • A change in the way things taste
  • Eye irritation
  • Acne
  • Skin inflammation, dermatitis
  • Flaking skin
  • General allergic reactions, including reactions where you use the shampoo
  • Hair discolouration and hives (also known as nettle rash or urticaria)

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
