When would a pharmacist recommend magnesium hydroxide?
Magnesium hydroxide may be recommended if you are suffering with indigestion symptoms, such as heartburn, flatulence and acid reflux.
Depending on the dose, this medicine may also be recommended to you to help relieve occasional constipation.
Magnesium hydroxide is a suspension that is to be taken by mouth. It contains 1.325g of active ingredient per 5ml.
The suspension relieves indigestion symptoms by neutralising stomach acid. It also has a mild laxative effect.
How should it be taken?
Magnesium hydroxide should only be taken by adults and children over the age of 12.
Shake the bottle well before each use.
The recommended dose for relieving heartburn and related symptoms is one or two 5ml spoonfuls (teaspoon) with a little bit of water. Take as required.
To relieve occasional constipation, the recommended dose is five - ten 5ml spoonfuls (25 - 50ml) in a glass of water. Take your dose just before bedtime.
Do not take more than the recommended dose.
If your symptoms get worse or last for longer than a few days, consult your GP or doctor.

This medicine should not be used if any of the below applies to you. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist as they will be able to recommend an alternative treatment.
- If you are allergic to magnesium hydroxide or any of the other ingredients listed in the patient information leaflet
- If you suffer from severe kidney failure
- If you have a severe condition affecting your stomach or bowel
Talk to your pharmacist or doctor before use if you are currently taking any other medication. This treatment may affect how other medicines work, so it is important that you tell your doctor or pharmacist about any other medication you may take. This includes, but is not limited to salicylates (such as aspirin or other painkillers).
Magnesium hydroxide is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Do not give to children under the age of 12.
If you experience any signs of side effects, stop using this treatment and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
