What is Imodium Instants?

Imodium Instants is a form of treatment for the relief of diarrhoea. These tablets can be used for 2 types of diarrhoea, short-term diarrhoea and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) diarrhoea. The active ingredient in these tablets is loperamide. Loperamide is a drug that works by slowing down bowel movements, which allows for more water to be absorbed into the body that has been lost as a result of diarrhoea.

What causes diarrhoea?

There are a number of potential causes of diarrhoea, and it may not always be obvious. Potential causes of diarrhoea include:

  • A stomach bug
  • Norovirus – also known as the vomiting bug
  • Food poisoning
  • A side effect of medicines
  • A food allergy
  • IBS
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Coeliac disease
  • Diverticular disease

Diarrhoea is usually a short-term condition and only lasts for 5-7 days.

Who are these diarrhoea treatment tablets suitable for?

These tablets are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over for short-term diarrhoea treatment. For IBS relief, only adults aged 18 and over 18 should use them. Do not use these tablets if any of the following apply to you:

  • Allergic to the ingredients contained in the tablets
  • Have severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics
  • Have an inflammatory bowel condition, such as ulcerative colitis
  • Are constipated
  • Have blood in the stools
  • Have a high temperature

If you have any other condition, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using these Imodium tablets.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these tablets?

Anyone who is pregnant should consult a medical professional for advice before using these tablets. Someone who is breastfeeding should not use these Imodium tablets. This is because small amounts can potentially get into breast milk.

How should Imodium Instants be used?

For short-term relief of diarrhoea, take 2 tablets and place them on the tongue. Do not swallow them, as they will dissolve in the mouth quickly on their own. After the initial 2 tablets, take 1 tablet after each loose bowel movement. Do not take for longer than 48 hours and do not take more than 6 tablets in a 24-hour period. For IBS diarrhoea, Use the same dosages but they can be taken for up to 2 weeks. This should only be for repeated attacks only, and not one single IBS diarrhoea attack. If symptoms have not after using for the recommended period, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice.

Are there any side effects?

As with many kinds of medication, there is a potential for side effects. Side effects that can occur include:

  • An allergic reaction, including a skin rash and swelling in the face
  • Passing out or fainting
  • Itchiness
  • Stomach pain
  • Difficulties passing water
  • Severe constipation
  • Burning sensation in the tongue
  • Nausea
  • A headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vomiting
  • Dry mouth

If you notice a side effect, stop using these tablets and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
