Aciclovir 5% Cream is a treatment for cold sores. It helps to treat the tingling and blistering caused by cold sores and aids in a faster recovery rate.
The antiviral cream speeds things up and makes your cold sore less contagious.
How Aciclovir 5% Cream works
Aciclovir 5% Cream contains the active ingredient aciclovir. Aciclovir stops the herpes virus from growing and spreading.
It controls the infection and helps your body’s immune system to fight it.
Directions
Always use Aciclovir 5% Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you.
Apply a small amount of the cream to the affected area 5 times daily. You should apply the product the moment you feel a tingle.
You can still treat your cold sore once it has broken out; however, treating it sooner can prevent the blisters from forming.
Continue using the cream for up to 10 days. If your cold sore hasn’t healed within 10 days, speak to your healthcare provider.
Side effects
Aciclovir 5% Cream may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
- Burning or stinging after application
- Mild drying or flaking of the skin
- Itching

Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
Aciclovir 5% Cream may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients.
Do not use this product on the genitals, eyes or inside the mouth.
Using/taking other medicines
If you are taking or have recently taken any medication, including medication obtained without a prescription, talk to your GP or pharmacist for advice before using this product.
Age restrictions
This product is not suitable for children under 12 years old.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before using any new product.
Storage information
Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
