What is Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream (HC cream)?

Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream, or HC cream, is a treatment for athlete’s foot and fungal sweat rashes. It targets the fungi and bacteria that cause the infection while working to soothe inflammation and relieve swelling and itching. If you’re suffering from a fungal skin infection and need fast and effective treatment, Canesten HC Cream can help.

What are athlete’s foot and fungal sweat rashes?

Athlete’s foot and fungal sweat rashes are common forms of skin infections. They happen in warm, damp areas of your skin, such as between your toes or between folds of skin. When fungi grow in these places, you can suffer from an infection that causes red, sore, inflamed patches of skin which can become itchy.

How will Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream treat my fungal infection?

Canesten HC cream contains the active ingredient clotrimazole, which helps to fight the bacteria and fungi which cause fungal infections. It also uses hydrocortisone, which is a mild steroid that helps to relieve swelling and itching in the inflamed area. Using hydrocortisone with clotrimazole creates a double-action treatment that can be used to ease a range of infections, including:

  • Fungal sweat rash
  • Athlete’s foot
  • Thrush
  • Jock itch
  • Nappy rash
  • Intertrigo (fungal infection of the breast fold)
  • Ringworm

Can I use this cream for jock itch?

Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream can be used to treat jock itch, which is a fungal infection that affects your groin. Jock itch is a type of a fungal infection called ringworm, so you may notice that your infection appears like a ring or circular rash on your skin.

Can I use this product to treat a nappy rash?

There are different causes of nappy rash, including allergic skin reactions or irritation. If your baby’s nappy rash is caused by a fungal skin infection, then you can use Canesten HC Cream to treat the area and make your baby more comfortable. However, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product on your child, so you can be sure that this is the best and safest possible treatment for them.

Can I use Canesten Hydrocortisone cream for thrush?

Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream can be used to ease external symptoms of thrush in both men and women. However, you should use this product on your genitals if you’re advised to do so by your doctor or pharmacist and remember that this product is for external use only. This product can help to ease symptoms like inflammation, itching, and redness that are caused by thrush.

Will this product affect my contraception?

If you use rubber contraceptives, such as condoms or diaphragms, as your main method of contraception, then you should be aware that using Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream on your genitals can make your contraception less effective than usual. You should use another method of contraception to prevent pregnancy for at least 5 days after using this product, such as the pill or implant.

How to use this product

Apply Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream in a thin and even layer to the affected areas twice a day. Rub in gently. You will only need around 1cm of cream per application. If you are using Canesten HC cream on your foot, make sure to wash and dry the foot thoroughly before applying, especially between the toes.

Can I buy Canesten HC Cream over the counter?

You do not need a prescription for Canesten HC cream, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream is the best choice for you.

Can I use this cream for razor burn on my down below as it’s really sore and itchy if not then can you recommend anything

Treating the underlying causes of itchy skin is the first step to avoid this annoyance for good, but here are a few ways to keep itchy skin at bay. 1. Often, irritated skin is a side effect of having very dry skin, which can be easily solved with a daily moisturizing routine. Opt for thick creams like Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair Lotion 2. Avoid taking long, hot showers or baths. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, and could aggravate irritation. 3. Look for unscented lotions, soaps, and laundry detergents, like Intensive Care Advanced Repair Lotion with hydrating glycerin, as some fragrances and chemicals can irritate sensitive skins. 4. Avoid itchy, thick fabric or tight-fitting clothes. Breathable fabrics like cotton in loose silhouettes will allow your skin to breathe without irritation.

Can i use this product on my 19 month baby to treat a rash on the back of the legs?

Don't use it on children under 10 unless it's been prescribed by a doctor.

I have an itchy anus with a red rash in the surrounding area. Is this cream suitable?

Anal itching, or pruritus ani, is a common symptom of a variety of conditions. Most cases of anal itching can be treated at home without needing to see a doctor. We go over the possible causes, along with at-home remedies to relieve itching.

The causes of anal itching are often related to skin or internal medical issues. Skin-related causes of an itchy anus include:

  • atopic dermatitis, a form of eczema
  • excess friction to the anal area, such as rough wiping after a bowel movement
  • exposure to perfumes and dyes present in toilet paper, soaps, or clothing detergents
  • improper wiping after having a bowel movement
  • psoriasis

This cream isn't suitable for this purpose. Make an appointment to see your doctor if your itching disrupts your daily life and is getting worse even after self-care treatments.

I have an itchy red patch on my testicles. Is it safe to use Canesten Hydrocortisone Cream?

This product is not suitable to be used on the testicles.

I would try clotrimazole without the hydrocortisone.

Will this cream help get rid of phimosis when performing stretches?

Phimosis is defined as the inability to retract the skin (foreskin or prepuce) covering the head (glans) of the penis. Phimosis may appear as a tight ring or “rubber band” of foreskin around the tip of the penis, preventing full retraction.

Canesten HC cannot be used for this purpose!

Christine,

Needed this product for persistent heat rash from wearing bras with manmade fibres. A poor mix in hot weather! Had been using general Canesten but the problem was mildly relieved but quickly returned. Needed something a little stronger without having to go to the hassles of making a doctors appointment for a simple matter.
