What is Daktarin Oral Gel?
Daktarin Oral Gel is a treatment for fungal infections and oral thrush which can be used in the mouth, or for infections in the throat, gut, or stomach. Its sugar-free formula is suitable for children as young as four months old and has a tasty orange flavour which will make it easier to use this medication until your infection has completely cleared.
What are fungal infections and oral thrush?
Thrush is a type of fungal infection which can appear in many different places all over the body, including the inside of the mouth, where it's known as oral thrush. Fungal infections happen when the delicate balance of natural bacteria in your body becomes disrupted, allowing natural yeast or fungus to grow and thrive, causing infection. Fungal infections like oral thrush can be uncomfortable, but can often be cleared up quickly and easily when given the proper treatment.
How will Daktarin Oral Gel help to treat a fungal infection in my mouth?
Every gram of Daktarin contains 20mg of the active ingredient, miconazole. Miconazole is an antifungal medication which tackles the fungi that cause fungal infections, destroying the fungi so your infection can clear up as quickly as possible.
Can I use this product while I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this or any other medication. Some medications may not be safe for you or your baby during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and your doctor or pharmacist can recommend an alternative remedy that will be safe for you both. Your doctor may still recommend Daktarin Oral Gel at this time if they think that you need it.
Can I give this treatment to my baby?
This product can be used to treat children aged over 4 months who are suffering from fungal infections. It’s ideal for infants who are suffering from oral thrush and may be too young to take other remedies safely.
Can I use this product if I’m taking other medication?
You should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using Daktarin Oral Gel if you are taking any other medication, including those bought without a prescription. Some medications can interact when used together, making them less effective or causing unpleasant side effects. Do not use this product if you are taking:
- Hay fever or allergy medications terfenadine, astemizole, or mizolastine
- Cisapride, which is a medication for digestive problems
- Lovastatin or simvastatin, which are medications to lower cholesterol
- Pimozide or sertindole, medication for conditions that affect thoughts, feelings, or behaviour
- Quinidine or dofetilide, medications for an irregular heartbeat
- Ergotamine, medication to treat a migraine
How to use this gel
Wash your hands before using this product. Apply Daktarin Oral Gel directly to the affected area with a clean finger if the infection is only in the mouth. If you are wearing dentures, remove them at night and rub them with the gel to prevent them from getting infected too. For best result, use after meals. You should apply this gel as your doctor tells you to, however, the suggested amount of this product is:
- For adults and children over the age of 2, suffering from an infection of the mouth or throat, apply 2.5ml (half a 5ml teaspoon) of gel four times a day, after food.
- For infants ages, 4 months – 2 years old, apply 1.25ml (a quarter of a 5ml teaspoon) of gel four times a day, after food
- For adults and children aged over 4 months, use 20mg per kg of the patient’s body weight every day. Divide this into 4 equal doses and take throughout the day. The maximum dose is 10ml of gel, four times a day.
Continue to use this product for at least a week after all of your symptoms have gone away. Do not take more than the recommended daily dose.
Can I buy Daktarin Oral Gel over the counter?
You do not need a prescription for Daktarin Oral Gel, however, you will be asked to complete a short medical questionnaire by your Chemist 4 U pharmacist before we can take your order. This includes some simple questions that all pharmacies legally are required to ask before supplying this kind of product. This helps our pharmacy team to be sure that this product is the best choice for you.
When should this product not be used?
Daktarin Oral Gel is not suitable for use by children under the age of 4 months, due to risk of choking. This oral gel is sticky, which helps it to stay in place and get to work. However, this can cause a choking hazard to children if it gets stuck in their throat and closes it off. Never apply this product to the back of the throat and supervise all children who use this product. Do not use this product if you are allergic to miconazole, similar antifungal medications, or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not use this product if you suffer from liver problems.
Does this product have any side effects?
Like all medications, Daktarin can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction, e.g. swelling of the face, lips tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, breathing difficulties, severe irritation, reddening, or blistering of the skin
- Severe skin disorders showing symptoms such as peeling, rashes with small pus containing pimples (with a fever), blistering of the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals
- Light-headedness
- Generalised itch
- Wheezing
- Difficulty breathing
- If you are taking blood-thinning medication (anticoagulants) such as warfarin, you could experience unexpected bleeding or bruising, nosebleeds, coughing up blood, blood in urine, black tarry stools, vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- Dry mouth
- Feeling or being sick
- Mouth discomfort
- Regurgitating food or liquid
- Gel tastes abnormal
- Loss or change in sense of taste
- Choking
- Diarrhoea
- Inflammation of the liver
- Sore mouth
- Tongue discolouration
- Rash filled with pus-filled pimples or blisters

How to store this gel
Store this product in a cool, dry place, that is below 30 degrees C. Store in the original packaging, do not use after the expiration date printed on the packaging has passed. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
