What is a chesty cough?

A chesty cough is what we call a cough that happens when your body produces mucus, or phlegm, in order to help to clear unwanted particles, such as dust or bacteria, your airways. Your body wants to move the excess phlegm away from your chest, which is what causes a chesty cough.

 

How does Benylin Chesty Coughs work to relieve my cough?

Benylin Chesty Coughs medicine contains the active ingredient diphenhydramine, which works as an antihistamine. This means that it helps to relieve coughing and secretions in your nose and chest which cause coughing. This product also contains levomenthol, which helps to clear congestion so you can breathe more easily.

 

How to use this cough medicine.

To treat a chesty cough, simply take two 5ml spoonfuls of Benylin Chesty Coughs medicine, four times a day. Do not take more than 4 doses of this medicine in any 24-hour period.

When should Benylin Chesty Coughs not be used?

Benylin Chesty Coughs is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the listed ingredients. Benylin Chesty Coughs is not suitable for those who have had a cough for a few weeks that may be caused by asthma, or a cough which brings up a lot of phlegm or mucus. Do not take this product if you are using depression medications known as Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).

Benylin Chesty Coughs can make you feel drowsy or dizzy. Do not attempt to drive or operate tools or machinery if you are affected by this product.

 

Does this product have any side effects?

Like all medicines, Benylin Chesty Coughs can have side effects although not everyone will get them. These side effects can include symptoms of an allergic reaction, including:

  • Skin rashes.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue.
  • Fits of numbness.
  • Itching.

Other side effects that you may experience while taking Benylin Chesty Coughs include:

  • Shakiness (tremors).
  • Drowsiness, dizziness, and blurred vision.
  • Increased awareness of heartbeat (heart palpitations).
  • Upset stomach.
  • Dry mouth, nose or throat.
  • Difficulty passing water.
