What is Bell's Emollient 50?

Bell’s Emollient 50 is an ointment that is designed to provide relief for dry skin. It contains the active ingredients of liquid paraffin and white soft paraffin. Both of these ingredients work to restore moisture in the skin and help prevent dry skin from forming.

What causes dry skin?

Dry skin can be caused by a number of different triggers. These triggers can either be external or internal. External triggers that can cause dry skin include:

  • The weather
  • UV sunlight
  • Washing too often
  • Using the wrong products
  • Some types of medication
  • Dehydration
  • Smoking

Internal factors that can cause dry skin include:

  • A family history of dry skin
  • Hormone changes
  • Your diet
  • Ageing

Knowing the cause of dry skin can help when it comes to getting the right treatment.

Who is this emollient suitable for?

This emollient is suitable to be used by adults and children who want relief from dry skin. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the emollient. If you are using any other form of medication, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this product?

This emollient treatment is safe to use by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are unsure, then consult a medical professional for advice.

How should Bell's Emollient 50 be used?

To use this ointment, apply a thin layer to any affected areas of the skin. To prevent hair irritation, apply in the direction of growth for the hairs. Apply the ointment when required, up to four times a day. For an adult, a single tub may last for up to a week. Use by the expiry date on the tub.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many types of medication, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • An allergic reaction such as a skin rash or itchy skin
  • Irritation of the hair follicles

If you notice any side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
