Aciclovir Tablets are an antiviral medication used to treat cold sores, which are small, fluid-filled blisters that are often grouped together. They appear on or around your lips due to the herpes simplex virus.
These tablets contain 200mg of the active ingredient aciclovir, an antiviral medicine that works by killing or stopping the growth of viruses, like the herpes simplex virus.
Directions
Always take these tablets exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. To take these tablets, you can either dissolve the tablet in a glass of water, stirring before drinking. Or, the tablet can be swallowed whole with water.
To treat cold sores, the usual dosage is one 200mg tablet taken 5 times per day. You should space your doses out by at least 4 hours. The suggested times are: 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm and 11pm. You should take these tablets for 5 days, longer, only if your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist tells you to.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Aciclovir Tablets may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include:
- Headache
- Feeling dizzy
- Feeling or being sick
- Diarrhoea
- Stomach pains
- Rash
- Skin reaction after exposure to light (photosensitivity)
- Itching
- Fatigue
- Unexplained fever
- Feeling faint, especially when standing up

Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
Warnings
Aciclovir Tablets may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you have ever had an allergic reaction to valaciclovir or aciclovir.
Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have kidney problems or you’re over 65 years of age. Care should be taken to ensure you remain hydrated as Aciclovir Tablets can be harsh on the kidneys.
Using/taking other medicines
You must tell your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist if you’re taking or using any other medicines before you take Aciclovir Tablets. This is especially important if you’re taking:
- Probenecid (used to treat gout)
- Cimetidine (used to treat stomach ulcers)
- Mycophenolate mofetil (used to stop your body rejecting transplanted organs)
Age restrictions
This medicine is potentially suitable to treat cold sores in children, if recommended by a healthcare professional. However, we are only able to prescribe Aciclovir Tablets to those aged 18 and over from our clinic.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine.
Driving and operating machinery
Aciclovir Tablets can make some people feel drowsy, dizzy and faint, which may impair your ability to concentrate and react. Therefore, do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
Storage information
Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
