Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets are used to treat migraines, helping to relieve your headache and other symptoms of a migraine attack, such as nausea or vomiting and sensitivity to light or sound.

These tablets contain the active ingredient zolmitriptan which belongs to a group of medicines known as triptans. When you have a migraine, your blood vessels may widen; zolmitriptan works by reducing the size of these blood vessels to effectively relieve your pain. Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets only work to treat a migraine once it's started; they cannot prevent them.

How zolmitriptan treats migraine headaches

Migraine symptoms may be caused by the widening of blood vessels in the head. Zolmitriptan is thought to reduce the widening of these blood vessels, helping to relieve your migraine and other symptoms of a migraine attack, such as feeling or being sick and being sensitive to light and sound. 

Directions

Always take Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. You can take Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets as soon as a migraine headache starts. You can also take it once an attack is underway.

The recommended dose is one tablet (either 2.5 mg or 5 mg). To use, peel the blister pack open as shown on the foil. Do not push the tablet through the foil. Place the tablet on your tongue, where it will dissolve and be swallowed with saliva. You do not need to take a drink of water to swallow your tablet.

You can take another tablet if the migraine is still present after two hours or if it returns within 24 hours. Do not use more than the dose prescribed for you. Do not use more than two doses in one day unless prescribed by your doctor. If you have been prescribed the 2.5 mg tablet, the maximum daily dose is 5 mg. If you have been prescribed the 5mg tablet, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg.

Side Effects

Like all medicines, Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. Common side effects include: 

• Abnormal sensations such as tingling in your fingers and toes or skin that is sensitive to touch
• Feeling sleepy, dizzy or warm
• Headache
• Uneven heart beat
• Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
• Stomach pain
• Dry mouth
• Muscle weakness or muscle pain
• Feeling weak
• Heaviness, tightness, pain or pressure in throat, neck, arms and legs, or chest
• Problems swallowing

Warnings

Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take these tablets if you are allergic to zolmitriptan or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not take these tablets if you have any of the following:

• High blood pressure
• If you have ever had heart problems, including a heart attack, angina (chest pain caused by exercise or effort), Prinzmetal’s angina (chest pain which happens at rest) or have experienced heart related symptoms such as shortness of breath or pressure over the chest
• If you have had a stroke or short-lasting symptoms similar to stroke (transient ischaemic attack or TIA)
• If you are at the same time taking some other medicines for migraine (e.g. ergotamine or ergot-type medicines like dihydroergotamine and methysergide) or other triptan medicines for migraine

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have any of the following: 

• If you are over the age of 65
• If you are taking any other medicines
• If you are at risk of getting ischaemic heart disease (poor blood flow in the arteries of the heart). Your risk is greater if you smoke, have high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, diabetes or if anyone in your family has ischaemic heart disease
• If you have been told that you have Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome (a type of abnormal heart beat)
• If you have ever had liver problems
• If you have headaches which are not like your usual migraine headache - the use of Buprenorphine together with Zolmitriptan can lead to serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition 

Age Restrictions

Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets are unsuitable for children. You must be aged 18 or over to take these tablets. If you’re looking for a migraine treatment for somebody under the age of 18, speak to your GP or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice on alternative treatment options.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, you must ask your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice before taking any new medicine. 

Food Warnings

You can take Zolmitriptan Orodispersible Tablets with or without food. It does not affect the way that the medicine works.

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.

What is a migraine?
