What is Videne 7.5% Surgical Scrub?
Videne 7.5% Surgical Scrub is a liquid antiseptic that can be used to disinfect and prevent infection of skin before surgical procedures. It can also be used for hand disinfection by surgical teams. The effective formula gradually releases iodine to kill or prevent the growth of harmful substances including bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa and spores. The scrub is applied topically to remove harmful substances directly from the skin so is ideal for disinfecting the site of medical procedures and cleansing hands.
What is an antiseptic?
Antiseptics help to fight infection by killing and preventing the growth of harmful microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses and fungi. They are useful for treating wounds, such as cuts and grazes, as well as disinfecting the skin before medical procedures and can also be used for pre-operative skin disinfection by for health professionals before surgical procedures.
How does Videne Surgical Scrub work?
The active ingredient in Videne Surgical Scrub is Povidone Iodine (also known as iodinated povidone) which is an antiseptic. It is commonly applied topically (directly to the skin) and has been used to treat wounds and as an effective disinfectant for over a hundred years. Iodianated povidone gradually releases iodine to kill or stop the growth of harmful microbials and substances, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses protozoa and spores.
How to use this product
Videne’s two main uses are as a skin preparation and as a surgical scrub so you should follow the instructions for each use exactly as described in the patient information leaflet.
Pre-operative Surgical Scrup
Wet the hands and forearms before applying around 3.5ml or Videne Surgical Scrub. Rub the product into the skin thoroughly for a minimum of two minutes. You may use a brush to scrub underneath the fingernails. Add water to develop the product into a lather before rinsing the skin completely, under running water.
Pre-operative Skin Preparation
The site of incision should be cleansed with Videne Surgical Scrub around 2-3 times before operation and then immediately prior to surgery. Wet the area to be cleansed and apply a sufficient amount of Videne. Wash the area for a 2 minutes with sterile gauze that has been dampened with water. Develop a lather and rinse thoroughly.
Warnings
- Only water should be used to dilute this product
- There are no special recommendation for the amounts used on children or elderly patients
- If Videne Surgical Scrub is accidentally swallowed, seek immediate medical advice from your nearest A & E Department
When NOT to use Videne
Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list) or:
- On newborn children
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding
- For regular or prolonged periods if you have thyroid problems or if you are taking lithium
Talk to your doctor or nurse before using Videne Surgical Scrub if:
- You are using on large wounds or severe burns, as it could produce adverse effects, such as changes in your blood chemistry and problems with your kidneys
- You are prone to or have ever been treated in the past for hyperthyroidism
Does this product have any side effects?
Like all medicines, Videne can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. Possible side effects include:
- Skin reactions - these are rare and affect less than 1 in 10,000 people
- May interfere with thyroid function tests if absorbed through intact or damaged skin
Can you use Videne with other medicines?
Speak to your doctor before using this product if you are taking any other medicines especially if you are using:
- Wound treatments
- Other skin disinfectants
- Certain antiseptics
- Lithium
