Paxlovid is an antiviral medicine designed to treat mild to moderate cases of COVID-19. It works by stopping the virus multiplying in cells, helping your body to overcome the symptoms of the infection faster. Paxlovid contains the active ingredients nirmatrelvir and ritonavir, suitable for adults aged 18 and over with a high risk of developing severe COVID-19 that could result in hospitalisation or death.
How Paxlovid treats COVID-19
The active ingredients in Paxlovid are nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. Nirmatrelvir stops COVID-19 from growing and spreading, preventing the virus from multiplying and keeping virus levels low in your body. This helps your immune system control the infection and reduces the risk of severe symptoms. Ritonavir helps keep nirmatrelvir from being broken down in your body long enough for it to work.
Directions
Paxlovid contains two medicines: nirmatrelvir and ritonavir. The recommended dose is 2 tablets of nirmatrelvir and 1 tablet of ritonavir taken orally (by mouth) once in the morning and once in the evening. For each dose, take all 3 tablets together at the same time. A course of Paxlovid lats 5 days.
