Optilast Eye Drops contain the active ingredient azelastine hydrochloride, an antihistamine. Antihistamines work by blocking the histamine that’s created by your body when you have an allergic reaction. Optilast Eye Drops can help to relieve allergy symptoms in the eyes by reducing inflammation. These eye drops can treat hay fever and other allergies like dust and animal dander. However, these drops are not suitable for treating eye infections.
Directions
Always use Optilast Eye Drops exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. For use in the eyes only. To treat eye symptoms caused by hay fever and other allergies, the recommended dose is one drop in each eye in the morning and in the evening. If you anticipate contact with pollen, the usual dose of Optilast Eye Drops may be taken as a preventive measure before going outside.
To help you put in your eye drops correctly, you may find it useful to sit in front of a mirror. First start by washing your hands, then gently wipe around your eyes with a clean tissue to remove any moisture. Unscrew the top of the bottle and check that the dropper is clean.
Carefully pull your lower eyelid down and place the drop inside the middle of your lower eyelid. Take care not to let the dropper touch your eye. Release your lower eyelid and gently press on the inner corner of your eye against the bridge of your nose. Keeping your finger pressed against your nose, slowly blink your eyes a few times to spread the drop across the surface of your eye. Blot away any excess medicine with a tissue. Repeat this process for your other eye.
Contact lenses
The ingredients in these eye drops may be absorbed by soft contact lenses, potentially changing their colour. You should remove contact lenses before using this product and put them back 15 minutes afterwards.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Optilast Eye Drops may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. It’s common to experience slight irritation (burning, itching, watering) in the eyes after putting in Optilast Eye Drops. This should not last long.
For more information on potential side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
Serious side effects
Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.
