What is Oilatum Emollient?

Oilatum Emollient is a bath additive that can be used to hydrate the skin that becomes dry because of conditions such as dry skin or eczema. The active ingredient in this bath additive is light liquid paraffin which works by forming a film over the skin which prevents moisture from escaping the skin. It also softens and soothes the skin. This bath additive does not contain any soaps.

What causes dry skin?

Dry skin can be caused by a number of different conditions. There are external factors and internal factors that can cause dry skin. External factors include:

  • The weather
  • Winter or summer seasons
  • UV sunlight
  • Washing the skin frequently
  • Using certain types of soaps
  • Some medicines

Internal triggers that can cause dry skin include:

  • Genetics – Some are more prone to dry skin than others
  • Hormone changes
  • Dieting
  • Ageing

Some conditions that cause dry skin, such as eczema, have no cure and can only be reduced by using the right form of treatment.

Who is this bath additive suitable for?

This Oilatum treatment is suitable to be used by adults and children who need relief from dry skin. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients that are contained in the bath additive. If you are using any other form of medication, then it is recommended that you speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this bath additive?

There is no evidence of any problems when using this additive when pregnant or breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and are looking for any treatment, then consult a medical professional for advice.

How should Oilatum Emollient be used?

For adults, add 1-3 capfuls of the solution to a 20.3cm (8 inches) bath and soak in it for 10-20 minutes. For children, use ½-2 capfuls in a smaller amount of bath water. When finished, pat dry with a towel. This treatment can also be used by applying it to the skin and rinse it off and then pat the skin dry.

Are there any side effects?

A side effect is likely to be caused by an allergic reaction, which may include a skin rash or irritation. If you notice a side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
