What are Anti-Diarrhoea Capsules?

Anti-Diarrhoea Capsules are used for the treatment of diarrhoea. These capsules contain the active ingredient loperamide. Loperamide is a medicine that reduces diarrhoea by helping to bulk up stools and making bowel movements less frequent. These capsules are intended for short-term use.

What causes diarrhoea?

The cause of diarrhoea is not always obvious. The most common causes are a stomach bug, a norovirus, and food poisoning. Other causes of diarrhoea include:

  • Intolerance to some foods or an allergy
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Coeliac disease
  • Diverticular disease

Diarrhoea can also be the result of a side effect to certain types of medication.

Who are these loperamide capsules suitable for?

These capsules are suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. Anyone who is allergic to loperamide or any other ingredient in the capsules should not use them. These capsules should also not be used if you have any of the following:

  • Inflammation of the colon or any other inflammatory bowel condition
  • Have bacterial enterocolitis
  • A swollen stomach
  • Constipation
  • A high temperature

If you are using any medication for any other condition, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using these capsules.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these capsules?

If you are pregnant, consult the advice of a medical professional before using these capsules. These capsules should not be used by anyone who is breastfeeding, as some small amounts can get into the milk.

How should Anti-Diarrhoea Capsules be used?

These capsules should be swallowed whole and not chewed. Take with a glass of water to aid swallowing. Take 2 capsules at the first instance of diarrhoea and 1 after each loose stool afterwards. Do not take more than 6 capsules in a 24-hour period and not for more than 24 hours, unless advised to do so by a doctor. If symptoms persist after treatment, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many types of medication, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • A headache
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Stomach pain
  • Itchiness or hives

If you notice any side effect, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
