Movicol is a treatment designed to deal with severe cases of constipation helping to reduce the discomfort you may be feeling while restoring your regular bowel movements.
Movicol is especially helpful in cases of long term or chronic constipation, or cases of chronic constipation which results in faecal impaction.
To take Movicol, dissolve one sachet of powder into 125ml of water and drink.
The amount of doses to take throughout the day will depend on how severe the constipation is. For less severe cases, one sachet daily will be sufficient. If you are suffering from particularly severe constipation, take up to three sachets daily, spread at regular intervals.
If suffering from faecal impaction, the suggested dose of Movicol is eight sachets daily, taken within a six hour period. You could dissolve individual sachets into 125mls of water, or choose to dissolve 8 sachets into one litre of water.
Movicol is suitable for adolescents, adults, and the elderly. However, Movicol should not be given to children under the age of twelve.
This treatment should not be taken if you suffer from severe bowel issues such as Crohn’s, unexplained pain, or a colon blockage that isn’t a result of constipation.
If you suffer from heart disease, you should not exceed two doses in one hour. In this instance, you should ensure that you spread your treatment throughout a six hour period when suffering from faecal impaction.
This treatment should alleviate regular constipation within two weeks. However, if your constipation is caused by a disease you suffer from, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease, your doctor may recommend longer treatment
For faecal impaction, this treatment can be taken for up to three days. It is important to consult your doctor before taking Movicol in order to confirm that you are suffering from a faecal impaction.
Side effects of Movicol may include:
• Excess wind
• Nausea and sickness
• Slight soreness of the anus and light diarrhoea.
These side effects will usually stop through reducing your dosage.
An allergic reaction may cause:
• Swelling of the face, mouth, or throat
• Difficulty breathing
• Swelling of the hands or feet
• High or low levels of potassium.
Ensure that you read the ingredients to avoid the risk of an allergic reaction. If you do experience any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Note that, if you are unable to take your dosage after you’ve already dissolved a sachet into water, you should keep the liquid covered and store in a fridge. Dispose the solution if not used within six hours.
