Metrogel is a topical treatment for redness and spots associated with rosacea. It contains the active ingredient metronidazole, a type of medicine known as an antiprotozoal and antibacterial agent. Metronidazole has been shown to help control infection and inflammation in rosacea. 

 

Directions

Always use Metrogel exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Wash and dry the affected areas of skin before applying Metrogel. Apply a thin layer to all the affected areas and rub in well, being careful to avoid your eyes. You should apply Metrogel twice a day (morning and evening), unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.

Do not go out into strong sunlight and avoid exposure to UV light (e.g. solariums, sun lamps) while using this product. It is advised that you avoid alcohol while using Metrogel. 

 

Side effects

Like all medicines, Metrogel may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. Common side effects include: 

  • Dry skin
  • Redness of the skin
  • Itching of the skin
  • Skin discomfort
  • Skin irritation 
  • Worsening of rosacea

For more information about uncommon side effects, refer to the patient information leaflet. If you experience any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

 

Warnings

Metrogel may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients or if you have any blood disorders. Check with your doctor or pharmacist before using Metrogel if you are taking any other medicines, especially those used to thin the blood. Speak to your doctor before using Metrogel if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

Age restrictions

Metrogel is not suitable for children and should only be used by adults aged 18 and over. If your child is suffering with rosacea, ask their doctor or pharmacist for suitable treatment options.

Storage

What are the symptoms of rosacea?

Rosacea is a long-term condition that affects the skin on the face. It is more common in women and those with lighter skin, but it can affect anyone, and symptoms are sometimes worse in men. The main symptoms include: 

  • Redness across your nose, cheeks, forehead and chin (this may be less noticeable on those with darker skin)
  • Burning or stinging when washing your face with water or skincare products
