What is Dovobet Ointment?

Dovobet ointment is a topical skin treatment to treat psoriasis in adults. Psoriasis is caused by your skin cells being produced too quickly. This ointment contains calcipotriol and betamethasone to help to bring the rate of skin cell growth back to normal in addition to reducing inflammation.

How to use this product

Always use Dovobet Ointment exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Use Dovobet Ointment only on your psoriasis. To use, start by removing the cap and check that the seal in the tube is not broken before you first use the ointment. To break the seal, use the point in the back of the cap. Squeeze the ointment onto a clean finger and rub gently into your skin to cover the affected area of psoriasis until most of the ointment has disappeared into the skin. After use, do not bandage, tightly cover or wrap the treated skin area. Always wash your hands well after using Dovobet (unless you are using the ointment to treat your hands). This will avoid accidentally spreading the ointment to other parts of your body (especially the face, scalp, mouth and eyes)

To achieve optimal effect, it’s recommended not to take a shower or bath immediately after application. After applying the ointment avoid contact with textiles which are easily stained by grease (e.g. silk). Use the ointment once a day. It may be more convenient to use the ointment in the evening.

Do not use more than 15 grams in one day. If you use other calcipotriol containing medicines, the total amount of calcipotriol medicines must not exceed 15 grams per day and the area treated should not exceed 30% of the total body surface. The usual duration of treatment is 4 weeks, with most patients seeing obvious results after 2 weeks, even if the psoriasis is not yet cleared at that point.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a skin condition that results in flaky, scale-like patches of skin, typically on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back, but they can appear anywhere. On brown, black and white skin the patches can look pink or red, and the scales white or silvery. On brown and black skin the patches can also look purple or dark brown, and the scales may look grey.

Those with psoriasis have an increased production of skin cells. Usually, skin cells are made and replaced every 3-4 weeks. However, if you have psoriasis, this process is quicker, with it only taking around 3-7 days. This build-up of skin cells is the reason for those scaly patches. It’s not fully understood what causes psoriasis, but it’s thought to be related to a problem with the immune system.

Is Dovobet Ointment suitable for children?

No, Dovobet Ointment  is not suitable for children under the age of 18. If you’re looking for a psoriasis treatment for your child, it’s recommended that you speak to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist for advice on alternative treatment options.
