Docusate Sodium (Generic Docusol) Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is commonly used to prevent and treat constipation in children. 

They can also be used to help your child open their bowels before an X-ray.

 

How Docusate Sodium (Generic Docusol) Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution works

Docusate Sodium belongs to a group of medicines called laxatives. They work by softening the stools and making bowel movements easier. 

 

Directions

Always take Docusate Sodium (Generic Docusol) Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. 

Children over 6 months: 5ml should be taken 3 times a day. 

Children aged 2-12: 5ml-10ml should be taken 3 times a day. 

The solution should be diluted in a glass of flavoured drink such as fruit juice or milk. It should be consumed within 30 minutes of preparation. 

When taken before a stomach X-ray the dose is 30ml as a single dose. 

 

Side effects

Like all medicines, Docusate Sodium (Generic Docusol) Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Common side effects include: 

 

  • Abdominal cramps 
  • Unpleasant aftertaste
  • Burning sensation in the mouth 

 

If your child experiences any side effects, including any not included in the patient information leaflet, you can report them using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

 

Serious side effects

Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. 

 

Warnings

Docusate Sodium (Generic Docusol) may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not allow your child to use this product if they are allergic to any of the ingredients or if:

 

  • They are suffering from stomach pains 
  • They have been feeling sick or have been sick in the last 24 hours
  • They have an obstruction in the gut
  • They have phenylketonuria 

 

Prolonged use can make the gut lazy. 



Using/taking other medicines

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if your child is taking or has recently taken any other medications. This medication should not be taken alongside mineral oil. 

Do not allow your child to take this medication if they are already taking other laxatives.

 

Age restrictions 

This medication is not suitable for children under 6 months old.

 

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging. Do not throw away any medicines via wastewater or household waste.
