What are Dioctyl 100mg capsules?

Dioctyl 100mg capsules are a laxative medication that can help to ease your constipation. It’s perfect for those who are suffering from constipation that has lasted for a long time or for those who are having a stomach X-Ray. You can also use Dioctyl if you’re suffering from piles, as it can make it easier for you to poo.

Why am I constipated?

Constipation is really common, and there are lots of reasons why you may experience it at any time. Some of the most common causes of constipation include:

  • Not getting enough fibre in your diet

  • Not drinking enough water

  • A change in your diet or routine

  • Not being active enough or spending a lot of time sitting or lying down

  • Stress, anxiety, or depression

  • A side effect of some medications, e.g. cocodamol

  • Ignoring the urge to go to the toilet

How will the docusate sodium in Dioctyl capsules relieve my constipation?

Docusate sodium is the active ingredient in Dioctyl capsules and it’s a type of medication called a laxative. It works by increasing the amount of water in your poo, softening it and making it easier to pass. It also helps to stimulate the muscles in your bowel, pushing it through your back passage so you can push it out more easily.

Can I take this laxative if I’m pregnant?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this product. Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy and medical professionals will be able to give you some good advice to help you get through it. If you’re breastfeeding you should be aware that small amounts of docusate sodium will be excreted in your breast milk, so this product should be used with caution.

Can I take this product if I’m taking other medication?

If you’re taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or medications you obtained without a prescription, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Dioctyl. This especially applies if you are taking mineral oil.

How to take Dioctyl 100mg capsules

Take up to 5 Dioctyl capsules a day, as needed. Take the capsules throughout the day with a sip of water. You can take the capsules with or without food. As your constipation eases you should start to reduce your dose.

When should this product not be used?

Do not take Dioctyl capsules if you’re allergic to docusate sodium up any of the other listed ingredients. This product is not suitable for use in children under the age of 12. Do not take this product if you:

  • Are suffering from stomach pain

  • Feel sick or have been sick within the last 24 hours

  • Have a blocked bowel

  • Have an intolerance to fructose, as this product contains sorbitol

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you:

  • Need to take laxatives every day

  • Have regular or constant stomach pain

Does Dioctyl have any side effects?

Like all medications, Dioctyl capsules can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These side effects include:

  • Diarrhoea

  • Feeling sick

  • Stomach cramps

  • Skin rash

If you experience these or any other side effects while taking this product you should stop use and speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
