What is Dermol Wash?

Dermol Wash is a soap substitute which is perfect for those with dry skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. It’s perfect for those who find that their skin becomes irritated by regular soaps and are looking for a cleanser that will be kind to dry and sensitive skin.

What happens when you have eczema?

When you have eczema, you’ll experience patches or wider spread areas of dry, red, itchy, and irritated skin. Some of the most common places where people experience eczema include the hands, backs of knees, insides of elbows, face, and scalp. Some people find that their eczema flares up when their skin comes into contact with something that irritates it, like some soaps, detergents, or weather conditions.

How will this product help to soothe my dry skin condition?

Dermol Wash contains four active ingredients that help to soothe dry skin conditions such as eczema in different ways. The first two are isopropyl myristate and liquid paraffin, which work as emollients. This means that they form a protective barrier over the skin, keeping moisture locked in and hydrating your dry skin. The other ingredients are benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, which work as antimicrobials. This means that they kill harmful bacteria which can irritate dry skin conditions and help to prevent infection if your skin is broken when you scratch an itch.

Can I use this product if I’m using another medication?

Dermol Wash is not known to interact with any other medications, so should be safe to use with other products. However, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using this product with any other medication, to be sure that this is safe for you.

Can I use this product if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

This product can be used while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. However, you should speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using any new medicated product to make sure that it’s safe for you and your baby at this time.

How to use Dermol Wash

Use Dermol Wash exactly as you would any other soap or shower gel. You can use it in the shower or bath as an all-over cleanser, or as an everyday hand soap. This wash will not foam or lather when you rub it into the skin and should be rinsed off after use. Pat your skin dry with a soft towel after using this product, rather than rubbing the skin, which can irritate dry skin conditions.

When should this product not be used?

Do not use Dermol Wash if you are allergic to isopropyl myristate, liquid paraffin, benzalkonium chloride, chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, or any of the other listed ingredients. For external use only, avoid getting this product into your eyes. If you have sensitive skin, make sure to test this cream on a small area of skin before use, to check for potential reactions. If you use this product in the bath or shower it can make their surfaces slippery, so you should take care to avoid slipping when you get in and out of the shower or bath and should clean away any greasiness with a suitable detergent after use. Dermol Wash contains paraffin, which is an effective emollient but can increase the flammability of any clothes, dressings, or other fabrics it comes into contact with. Avoid naked flames, lit cigarettes, or any other sources of the ignition while using this product and remember to change dressings and clothing regularly.

Does this product have any side effects?

Like all medication, Dermol Wash can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. If you experience any of the following side effects, you may be experiencing a severe allergic reaction and should seek medical help right away:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Sudden, uncharacteristic red itchy skin rash (hives) away from where you’ve applied the cream
  • Wheezing or breathing difficulties
  • Feeling dizzy or faint
  • Strange metallic taste in the mouth
  • Collapse

Other side effects include:

  • Skin reactions in the treated area, e.g. redness, irritation, itching
  • Your skin condition may look or feel worse

If you experience these or any other side effects while using this product, stop use and speak to your doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist right away. For more information about reporting the side effects of medication, please see the MHRA’s Yellow Card Scheme.
