Zithromax capsules are an antibiotic treatment that can be used for bacterial infections including chlamydia, pneumonia, and sinusitis. You’ll only need to take your treatment once a day for it to be effective, working fast to combat the bacteria causing your infection and helping you to feel better. If you’re concerned about an STI or other infection that you’ve developed, start a consultation with our prescribers and find out whether Zithromax capsules are right for you.

What can I use azithromycin for?

Azithromycin can be used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Some of the most common reasons why people are given this treatment include:

  • Chlamydia
  • Chest, throat, or nasal infections
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia
  • Tonsillitis
  • Sore throats or pharyngitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Ear infections
  • Skin or soft tissue infections, e.g. abscesses, boils
  • Other STIs, e.g. gonorrhoea

How Zithromax treats bacterial infections like chlamydia

Azithromycin is an antibiotic that targets the bacteria that cause infections. Infections happen when the balance of good and bad bacteria in your body is disturbed and harmful bacteria are given the chance to thrive, giving you your infection. By combating these bacteria, azithromycin helps your body to fight them off, restoring your natural balance and effectively clearing up your infection.

Directions

You should take Zithromax 250mg capsules either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, swallowing them with a sip of water. The number of capsules you will need to take will differ depending on the kind of condition you’re treating. You should always follow the dosage instructions given to you by your doctor carefully, but the usual doses recommended by the manufacturer are as follows:

Condition Number of capsules to take
Usual recommended dose 2 capsules once a day for a total of 3 days
For chlamydia 4 capsules taken all at once on one day
For gonorrhoea

4 - 8 capsules taken all at once on one day, sometimes alongside 250 - 500mg of ceftriaxone

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking levocetirizine if:

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warning

You usually won’t be prescribed Zithromax during your pregnancy or while you’re breastfeeding. Some medications can have an effect on you or your baby during these times, which is why you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medication. If you’re suffering from a bacterial infection, your prescriber will assess your condition, including your pregnancy, and recommend a treatment that will be the best choice for you. They may still prescribe Zithromax if they think that the potential benefits this medication could have for you would outweigh the risks.

Alcohol Warning

You can drink alcohol while you’re taking Zithromax, as it won’t affect your medication. However, we usually recommend avoiding alcohol as much as possible when you’re taking most medications, just to be on the safe side.

Other Medication

If you’re taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or medicines you obtained without a prescription, you should tell your prescriber about them during your consultation. This especially applies if you are already taking:

  • Ergot or ergotamine, which are used for cluster headaches
  • Anticoagulants, also known as blood thinners, such as warfarin
  • Ciclosporin, which is used to suppress the immune system after organ and bone marrow transplants
  • Antacids, which are used for indigestion and acid reflux
  • Digoxin, which is used to treat heart failure
  • Colchicine, which is used for gout and familial Mediterranean fever
  • Terfenadine, which is used for hay fever and skin allergies

Will this antibiotic affect my contraception?

Unlike some other antibiotics, azithromycin doesn’t affect contraceptive pills, including the mini pill, the combined pill, and the morning after pill. However, sickness and diarrhoea are both known side effects of this medication and if you experience either of them and they’re severe, this could affect your contraception. If you vomit or have diarrhoea more than 8 times within 24 hours then make sure to use an additional method of contraception (e.g. a condom) and speak to your doctor or pharmacist as needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a prescription for Zithromax or can I buy it over the counter?

You do need a prescription for Zithromax in the UK. Our healthcare professionals can provide prescriptions if they think this treatment would be right for you and your condition. When you click the button which reads “Start Consultation” at the top of this page, you’ll see a short questionnaire set up by our healthcare team which is designed to help them understand your medical needs. Just like an in-person consultation with your GP, our doctors will assess your answers to their questions and write a prescription for the treatment they think will be best for you. You’ll then be able to pay for your medication and we’ll send it out to you quickly and in discreet packaging.

Can I use azithromycin for acne?

Azithromycin is not typically used for acne itself, but it may be used to treat infections brought about by acne. For example, severe acne can sometimes cause boils or abscesses, which can both be treated effectively with azithromycin. If you have acne and have found that skincare products or over the counter remedies haven’t managed your symptoms effectively, you may benefit from a prescription acne treatment, so make sure to speak to your doctor or start a consultation with one of our prescribers now.

Why do I have allergies?

Allergies simply mean that your body is sensitive to a substance that is usually harmless, for example, pollen, dust, pet fur, or certain foods. When you come into contact with something you’re allergic to, your body will react to remove it, releasing a hormone called histamine to get the job done. Histamine tells different parts of your body to react in a way meant to remove the irritant, causing symptoms such as:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes, ears, nose, or throat
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Itchy rashes
  • Coughing
  • A sore throat

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (or STI), and it’s one of the most common STIs in the UK at the moment. It’s passed from person to person through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex as well as sharing sex toys, in fact, chlamydia can be spread without penetration happening at all, as it can be passed on if your genitals touch. Chlamydia usually isn’t serious and it can be treated easily, but if you don’t catch it quickly it can spread to other parts of your body, causing complications, which is why it’s so important to get regular STD tests if you are sexually active. Unfortunately, many people don’t notice any symptoms of chlamydia when they have it, but some of the most common ones you should look out for include:

  • Pain when you pee
  • Unusual discharge from your vagina, penis, or bottom
  • Stomach pain, bleeding after sex and bleeding between periods
  • Pain and swelling in the testicles
