What is Buscopan and when is it used?

Buscopan cramp tablets are used to relieve colicky abdominal pain that is caused by painful spasms in the muscles of the gastrointestinal (GI) or Genito-urinary (GU) tract.

Hyoscine, the active ingredient works by relaxing the muscle that is found in the walls of the stomach, intestines, bowel, bile duct and urinary tract. This type of muscle is called smooth muscle or involuntary muscle.

How will it treat my symptoms?

Hyoscine stops the spasms in the smooth muscle by preventing acetylcholine from acting on the muscle. It does this by blocking the receptors on the muscle cells that the acetylcholine would normally act on.

Can I buy Buscopan Over the Counter?

Yes, you don’t need a prescription to buy this dose, some doses will require a prescription but this one does not. A pharmacist will need to ensure the treatment is suitable and safe for you.

What causes stomach cramps?

A stomach ache, including stomach cramps or abdominal pain, doesn’t usually last long and isn’t usually caused by anything serious. Some common causes of a stomach ache include:

  • Trapped wind (flatulence)
  • Pain or discomfort after eating
  • Being unable to poo (constipation)

Does Buscopan cause any side effects?

Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Just because a side effect is stated here does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience it.

Some uncommon side effects are listed below:

  • Faster than normal heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dry mouth
  • Small blisters on the hands and feet (dyshidrosis)
  • Allergic skin reactions as hives or itching

Just like when you buy this medicine in a high street or local pharmacy, the pharmacist will need to ask you a few questions. This is a legal requirement for selling this type of medicine.

You may not always realise when your local pharmacist asks you the required questions, as this can sometimes be done subtly. When sold online, we need to make sure our pharmacists have all the information they need to ensure this treatment is right for you.

Don’t you just hate blockages? Whether it is in the nose and you struggle to breathe through it and smell, or whether it is a traffic jam caused by an accident that leaves you stuck on the road, they are a pain.

The same can be said about constipation, a simple blockage in the digestive system that can cause a lot of problems. To find the solution to constipation, first, you need to know the cause.
