What is Hydromol Cream?

Hydromol is a light and gentle moisturising emollient cream. It helps to smooth the skin by sealing in moisture and keeping the skin hydrated. It contains the unique active ingredient, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate in a light, fragrance-free cream which is easily absorbed by the skin and provides effective hydration. The cream not only attracts moisture to the skin, it forms a protective barrier to lock it into the skin, to keep it hydrated and moisturised.  It can be used with any condition which causes dry skin, such as eczema. Restore your skin’s natural hydrating properties to keep your skin hydrated, comfortable and healthy with Hydromol Cream.

What is eczema?

Eczema (also known as atopic dermatitis) is a skin condition that can affect both children and adults. It causes the skin to become itchy, dry, cracked and red. For most people it is a chronic (long-term) condition that they will have to manage for the rest of their life, although it is possible to improve the condition over time, especially if it developed during childhood. Eczema can affect the skin on any part of the body, but it tends to most commonly affect:

  • Backs and fronts of the knees
  • Outside or inside of the elbows
  • Around the neck
  • Hands
  • Cheeks
  • Scalp

It is possible for those with eczema to experience periods when the symptoms are less noticeable, as well as periods when symptoms become more severe, which are known as flare-ups. The flare-ups can be triggered by different factors in the environment.

What is triggering my eczema?

There are many triggers that can affect eczema and make symptoms worse. Identifying what is triggering your eczema and avoiding these triggers can help to manage eczema symptoms. Common triggers include:

  • Soaps, deodorants and bubble baths: some ingredients in these products can cause the skin to become dry and irritated - try swapping these products for emollient creams and bath emollients
  • Wool and synthetic fibres: some fibres and materials can irritate dry skin and eczema - try to wear cotton, silver-coated textiles
  • Biological washing powders and conditioners:  the ingredients in this product can irritate the skin - try to use non-bio alternatives
  • Stress: it has been suggested that their condition gets worse when they are stressed - try to implement relaxation techniques into your lifestyle
  • Heat: eczema tends to cause the skin to become inflamed, so there is already a lot of heat in the skin - try to keep your skin cool when possible

How can you treat eczema?

Although there is no cure for eczema, there are many steps you can take to relieve and manage symptoms.

  • Try to avoid scratching as this can damage the skin and make your condition worse
  • Avoid any triggers you know can exacerbate your symptoms
  • Some foods such as eggs and cows’ milk has been known to trigger eczema symptoms - speak to your doctor before making any changes to your diet
  • Use emollients to reduce loss of hydration in skin
  • Speak to your GP about topical corticosteroids to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Antihistamines can help to relieve itching caused by eczema

If your symptoms are having an impact on your day to day life or lifestyle changes are causing no improvement, speak to your doctor as they may be able to prescribe a medicine treatment suitable for you and your condition.

What is an emollient?

Emollients are moisturisers or moisturising treatments which are applied topically to the skin to reduce water loss and to lock in moisture. They provide a protective barrier which prevents moisture loss and helps to strengthen the skin’s barrier to prevent cracking and dryness. This protection and strength can prevent harmful substances from entering the skin and causing infection or irritation. Emollients can soothe and relieve symptoms caused by dry skin conditions like eczema as it keeps the skin moisturised and flexible whilst preventing cracking and discomfort.

What is Complete Emollient Therapy?

Complete Emollient Therapy or (CET) utilises a combination of products regularly to ensure your skin is moisturised at all times. It helps to support and strengthen your skin’s natural barrier by locking in moisture and preventing irritants from entering and causing irritation. When implementing Complete Emollient Therapy, you will replace drying soaps with emollient based cleansers followed by regular and liberal application of emollient creams or ointments throughout the day. When it comes to using emollients to treat symptoms of eczema it is better to use a little too much than not enough, so do not be sparing when applying emollient creams or lotions. It can also be beneficial to apply creams and moisturisers after bathing or showering to seal moisture into the skin’s surface. It is vital to remember to not discontinue Complete Emollient Therapy when you notice your symptoms improving, as they can become worse again. For long-term skin conditions, such as eczema, it can be beneficial to maintain this therapy for as long as required to manage your symptoms and prevent them from having an impact on your day to day life.

How can Hydromol help to treat eczema?

Hydromol Cream is a humectant which means it attracts moisture to the skin. It achieves this with the unique active ingredient, sodium pyrrolidone carboxylate which penetrates the skin and attracts moisture from the lower layer of the skin into the upper layer, which increases the water content in the upper layer of your skin. In environments where the humidity is higher than 50-70%, this product is also capable of attracting water  Once the moisture is trapped, the cream forms a protective, fine, oil-based film on your skin which seals this moisture in to keep your skin hydrated. Hydromol is easily absorbed by the skin and can be applied as often as required.

How to use this product

Apply Hydromol to the affected area or areas and massage into the skin as often as required. It is recommended to use Hydromol after bathing or showering as the warmth of your skin will increase absorption.
