What is Benylin Children's 6+ Chesty Coughs?

Benylin Children’s 6+ Chesty Coughs is a medicine that will treat a chesty or a mucus cough. It works thanks to the active ingredient guaifenesin. Guaifenesin is what is known as an expectorant, this is a drug that will reduce the amount of mucus or phlegm that is blocking the airways, making it easier to breathe and also cough up the remaining mucus or phlegm.

What is a chesty cough?

A chesty cough is a type of a cough that is caused when mucus becomes blocked in the chest and throat. This results in a cough that is intended to clear the mucus. However, because it is stuck where it is, it cannot be coughed up. Therefore, treatment is needed to clear it. A mucus cough is often a symptom of a cold or flu. It can also be caused by an allergic reaction; such as hay fever.

Who is this cough medicine suitable for?

This cough medicine is suitable to be used by children between the ages of 6-12. For children older, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist for advice on what treatment you should use. Do not use this medicine if another cough treatment is already being used.

How should Benylin Children's 6+ Chesty Coughs be used?

Take two 5ml spoonfuls up to four times a day. Do not exceed this. Also, do not exceed four 10ml doses in a 24-hour timeframe. Do not give to a child under the age of 12 for more than five days, without the advice of a doctor beforehand.

Are there any side effects?

A side effect will most likely be caused by an allergic reaction. Potential side effects include:

  • Skin Rashes
  • Blistering
  • Peeling
  • Hives
  • Stomach pain or aches
  • Diarrhoea
  • Vomiting

If you notice a side effect, then speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
