What is azelastine & fluticasone (generic Dymista) nasal spray?

This nasal spray contains two active ingredients that work together to treat moderate to severe allergies. Azelastine is an antihistamine that blocks allergic reactions, and fluticasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation.

It treats seasonal allergies (like hay fever) and year-round allergies (from dust mites, mould, dust, or pets). It helps relieve a runny nose, sneezing, an itchy or blocked nose, and post-nasal drip.

What’s the difference between azelastine & fluticasone and Dymista nasal spray?

Dymista is simply the branded version of azelastine and fluticasone nasal spray. They contain the same active ingredients and work in exactly the same way, so there's no difference in effectiveness.

How does azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray work?

This nasal spray combines two ingredients that work together to treat your nasal allergy symptoms. Azelastine (an antihistamine) provides rapid relief by blocking histamine to quickly reduce sneezing, itching, and a runny nose, while fluticasone (a corticosteroid) reduces inflammation in your nasal passages for longer-lasting relief, especially from congestion.

How to use azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray

For adults and children over the age of 12, spray once into each nostril, morning and evening.

For step-by-step images on exactly how to use this nasal spray, please refer to the patient information leaflet provided.

Azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray side effects

Common side effects of azelastine & fluticasone may include:

  • ·       nosebleed
  • ·       headache
  • ·       a bitter taste in your mouth, especially if you tilt your head backwards when you are using the nasal spray
  • ·       unpleasant smell

For more information on side effects, including potentially serious side effects, please refer to the patient information leaflet.

When to avoid azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray

  • ·       Do not use if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients.
  • ·       This nasal spray is unsuitable for children under the age of 12.
  • ·       Rarely, this medicine causes fatigue, dizziness, or weakness. If this happens, don't drive or use machinery, and avoid alcohol as it can make these effects worse.

·       Tell your prescriber if you’re taking/using any other medicines.

Alternatives to azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray

If you're looking for an alternative, Dymista is the branded version of azelastine and fluticasone nasal spray with the same active ingredients and effectiveness.

Other options include corticosteroid nasal sprays like Avamys for congestion, antihistamine nasal sprays like Rhinolast, or antihistamine tablets like cetirizine.

Frequently asked questions about azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray

Is azelastine & fluticasone nasal spray available over the counter?

Azelastine and fluticasone nasal spray is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, so it's not available over the counter. You'll need to complete a consultation first, and one of our clinicians will determine if it's the right allergy treatment for you.

Does azelastine clear your sinuses?

Azelastine is an antihistamine that targets symptoms like sneezing, itching, and a runny nose rather than directly clearing sinuses. However, when combined with fluticasone (a corticosteroid), it becomes much more effective at relieving sinus congestion.
