What is Aptamil Anti-Reflux Powder?
Aptamil Anti-Reflux is a powder made with carob bean gum. It’s designed to reduce reflux and regurgitation in babies from birth to 12 months, helping to keep their formula down.
When mixed with boiled water, it creates a nutritionally complete formula, meaning that it’s suitable as a sole source of nutrition from birth to 6 months, and as part of a weaning diet from 6 months to 12 months.
What's the difference between Aptamil Pepti 1 and Aptamil Anti-Reflux?
Aptamil Pepti 1 is ideal whereas Aptamil Anti-Reflux is specifically designed to manage the dietary needs of babies with reflux. Aptamil Anti-Reflux is also halal approved, unlike some other Aptamil products.
When should you use Aptamil Anti-Reflux?
Aptamil Anti-Reflux should only be used under advice from a healthcare professional, after full consideration of which other feeding options are available to you and possible for you.
Can you mix Aptamil Anti-Reflux with normal Aptamil?
It's always worth speaking to your doctor or a pharmacist if you're thinking about mixing Aptamil Anti-Reflux with standard Aptamil. They can advise whether it's suitable for your baby, as combining the formulas may affect the way the anti-reflux formula is intended to work and its nutritional balance.

It’s important to take extra care when making Aptamil Anti-Reflux, as powdered formula isn’t sterile, and making it up at lower temperatures may not kill bacteria it may contain.
To prepare your baby’s formula:
- 1. Wash your hands and sterilise all utensils according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 2. Boil some freshly run water and leave to cool for no more than 45 minutes.
- 3. Measure the required amount of water into a sterilised bottle.
- 4. Use the scoop provided to add the correct amount of powder to the water, making sure to level off the scoop required.
- 5. Place the sterilised teat and cap on the bottle.
- 6. Hold the bottle horizontally and shake from left to right for ten seconds, then hold it vertically and shake from top to bottom for ten seconds.
- 7. Leave the bottle to stand for 5 minutes to allow it to thicken.
- 8. Feed your baby immediately after preparation, making sure to check the temperature of the feed beforehand.
You should only make the formula when you need to feed your baby, instead of in advance. You should always add the correct measure of powder, as adding too many or too few scoops can be harmful for your baby.
Potential Aptamil Anti-Reflux side effects
You may notice that your baby’s stools change consistency when using this formula. This is usually normal, as the formula is specially thickened with carob bean gum to help keep it down in the stomach. As your baby’s digestive system adjusts to the formula, their stools may become firmer or looser than usual.
If your baby’s teeth come into contact with the formula too often or for too long, it can cause damage to their sensitive teeth. This is because the thick consistency of the formula can stick to your baby’s teeth. Make sure your baby’s teeth are cleaned after the last feed at night.
Most cases of reflux aren't a cause for concern, but if your baby is struggling to gain weight, develops reflux suddenly, or is projectile vomiting, it's best to speak to your GP.
