Utrogestan is used in combination with oestrogen-based hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to treat or reduce the symptoms of menopause.

During menopause, the levels of the female hormone known as oestrogen drop, and this causes a number of changes in the body. One of the most notable changes is menstruation coming to an end. You’ll no longer have periods and may experience a range of symptoms due to hormone levels dropping such as hot flushes, muscle and joint aches, difficulty sleeping and vaginal dryness. HRT helps to improve these symptoms by replacing the lost hormones.

Utrogestan contains progesterone and is taken with another medicine known as oestrogen. Both progesterone and oestrogen are hormones given to reduce the symptoms experienced during menopause.

How Utrogestan works

The purpose of taking Utrogestan is to stop the effects of oestrogen on the womb lining. HRT that contains oestrogen only can cause an overgrowth of the womb lining which can increase the risk of developing endometrial cancer if left untreated. The progesterone in Utrogestan prevents this risk by shedding the lining of the womb just like a period. Depending on how you take Utrogestan, you may experience a withdrawal bleed similar to a period.

Directions

Always take Utrogestan capsules exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Ultrogestan 100mg can be taken one of two ways. Usually, you would take 200mg (two capsules) at bedtime for the last twelve days of your oestrogen cycle (day 15 to day 26) and this can trigger a withdrawal bleed for a few days after. Continue to take your oestrogen HRT every day. The alternative method of taking Utrogestan is 100mg (one capsule) taken at bedtime on days 1 to 25 of each cycle.

  • Swallow capsules whole with water
  • Do not take Utrogestan with food
  • Take your oestrogen HRT at the same time as Utrogestan
  • If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if your next dose is due, skip the missed dose
  • If you take more Utrogestan than you should, speak to your doctor or go to the hospital and remember to take your medicine pack with you
  • If you have surgery planned, tell your doctor that you are taking this medicine as you may need to stop taking it around 4-6 weeks before surgery
