What is Sytron Elixir?

Sytron is used in the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. It can be used by adults, children, and babies diagnosed with having too little iron in the body, it works as a supplement to boost iron levels. Unlike other iron supplements, Sytron is less likely to cause stomach upsets or discolour teeth and is a good option for those who have had those side effects with other treatments. It is also a good alternative treatment for pregnant women if other forms of oral iron are not well tolerated.

What is the recommended dosage?

Always take Sytron Elixir exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. For adults and the elderly taking this medicine to treat anaemia, 1 or 2 5ml spoonfuls should be taken by mouth 3 times a day. For children, this is 2-3 divided doses depending on the weight of the child.

Sytron Elixir is also used to prevent anaemia in babies and children. The dosage for babies depends on how much iron their bodies can absorb and they will be given their dosage by a healthcare professional. Babies of a low birth weight who are breastfed only are given 0.9ml in a 1ml syringe, and babies aged 6-24 months are given 1 x 2.5ml spoonful daily. Children aged 2-5 years are given 1 x 5ml spoonful daily and this is increased to 1-2 daily spoonfuls if they are aged 6-11. Adolescents are to take 2 x 5ml spoonfuls per day.

How does Sytron treat and prevent anaemia?

Sytron contains the active ingredient sodium feredetate trihydrate which is an unionised form of iron. Once broken down in the gut it releases iron without causing stomach upset, this is because it doesn’t contain iron salts which are responsible for the stomach issues and teeth discolouration that usually occurs with other iron supplements. Sytron helps to increase the levels of iron in the body to make healthy red blood cells which carry oxygen around the body.

What are the symptoms of anaemia?

Anaemia causes a range of common symptoms which can be subtle, these include:

  • Tiredness and lack of energy

  • Pale skin

  • Shortness of breath

  • Heart palpitations

Other less common symptoms can include headaches, ulcers in the corners of your mouth, spoon-shaped nails, and noticeable hair loss when brushing or washing.

Can Sytron be taken with food and drink?

Sytron is best taken on an empty stomach but taking it with food may help to ease any stomach discomfort. Do keep in mind that Sytron can interact with certain foods and drinks, in particular; tea, coffee, eggs, milk, ascorbic acid (vitamin c) and citric acid. Avoid taking Sytron with any of these.

When should this product not be used?

Sytron may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to sodium feredetate trihydrate or any of the other ingredients, or if you have any of the following:

  • Haemochromatosis or haemosiderosis - a disorder which causes excessive absorption and storage of iron

  • A history of sensitivity to iron-containing preparations

  • Repeated blood transfusions or have had them in the past

  • Are currently having iron injections

Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have any of the following:

  • Haemolytic anaemia

  • Iron storage or absorption disease

  • Gastrointestinal disease

  • Are having tests on your stools as iron preparations colour the faeces black and can interfere with test results

The above advice also applies if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Dimercaprol (for metal poisoning)

  • Iron-containing medicines or tonics

  • Chloramphenicol, fluoroquinolones or tetracyclines (to treat infections)

  • Penicillamine (for rheumatoid arthritis)

  • Methyldopa (for high blood pressure)

  • Mycophenolate (to prevent organ transplant rejection)

  • Levodopa, carbidopa or entacapone (for Parkinson's disease)

  • Bisphosphonates (for osteoporosis)

  • Thyroxine (for thyroid problems)

  • Trientine (for Wilson's Disease)

  • Cholestyramine (for high cholesterol)

  • Proton-pump-inhibitors e.g. omeprazole (for stomach ulcers)

  • Bicarbonates, carbonates, calcium, magnesium, zinc and other mineral supplements (indigestion and antacid remedies)

Are there any side effects?

Like all medicines and supplements, Sytron may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness.

When you first start taking Sytron you may experience nausea and mild diarrhoea but this should disappear quickly after stopping this treatment, and you should restart it at a lower dose to prevent these side effects. Children who have been taking a high dose of Sytron for a long time are at risk of toxic accumulation in the body.
