What is Propranolol?

Propranolol belongs to a group of medicines known as beta-blockers. It is used to treat a variety of issues including preventing migraines and treat heart problems, but it is often used to help relieve symptoms of situational anxiety, such as sweating and shaking, by slowing your heart rate down.

How to take Propranolol

Always take this medicine exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as advised by a doctor or a Chemist 4U pharmacist.

For Situational Anxiety, it is recommended to take 40mg once a day- speak to your doctor or a Chemist 4U pharmacist for recommendations on the correct dosage for your symptoms.

Take with water before meals.

Do NOT stop taking this medicine unless your doctor tells you to stop.

How can propranolol help relieve symptoms of Situational Anxiety?

Propranolol belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers which work by changing the way your body responds to some nerve impulses, including your heart. Propranolol slows down your heart rate, which makes it easier for your heart to pump blood around your body. Propranolol can be taken before the situation that triggers anxiety to help reduce symptoms such as fast heart rate, palpitations, shaking and sweating.

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a feeling of unease, worry or fear that can be mild or severe. Everyone can feel worried from time to time, but feelings of anxiety can be constant, hard to control and potentially affect daily life.

Symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Feeling restless or worried
  • Having trouble concentrating or sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Heart palpitations

Situational anxiety

Situational anxiety occurs when you experience symptoms of anxiety in a specific circumstance such as public speaking, spending time in a crowd or small spaces. Some people may experience panic attacks or extreme anxiety when triggered by these situations, which can be debilitating and distressing.

When to see a doctor

Although feelings of anxiety can be perfectly normal from time to time, you should seek medical attention if your anxiety is affecting your daily life or causing you distress.

Can you take Propranolol with other medications?

Seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist 4U pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines especially:

  • Medicine to treat heart diseases
  • Medicines to treat irregular heartbeat
  • Ergotamine derivates or rizatriptan
  • Adrenaline
