What is Nicotinell Gum 2mg?

Nicotinell Gum is a type of treatment that can help you to quit smoking for good. It helps you to gradually cut down on the number of cigarettes or amount of nicotine you need every day until you can quit completely. Cutting down gradually helps you to avoid cravings, making it more likely that you’ll be successful as you try to quit.

Why is it so difficult to quit smoking?

Quitting smoking is difficult because your body becomes dependant to the nicotine in cigarettes. When you try to quit without help, this dependence means that you can experience unpleasant side effects that can make you want to smoke again. Many people who try to quit smoking cold turkey fall back into the habit of smoking as these side effects can become very strong, making you crave cigarettes more and more.

How will Nicotinell Gum help me to quit smoking?

Nicotinell Gum is a type of treatment known as NRT, or Nicotine Replacement Therapy. This means it works by replacing the nicotine you’d usually get from your cigarettes, helping you to avoid nicotine cravings that can make you want to give in and continue smoking. Over time, you can reduce the strength of the NRT products you use, reducing your nicotine intake in a slow and controlled way that will help you to quit for good. You can get lots of different types of NRT products, including Nicotinell Gum, patches, lozenges, and more.

Is Nicotinell Gum 2mg right for me?

Nicotinell Gum 2mg is ideal for those who smoke less than 20 cigarettes a day, or between 20 – 30 cigarettes a day. If you smoke more than 30 cigarettes a day, you should use Nicotinell Gum 4mg to begin with and then switch to 2mg gum as you reduce the amount of nicotine you need to take in every day to avoid cravings.

Can I use nicotine gum if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding you should try not to use Nicotinell Gum or any other NRT product and should try to quit smoking by yourself. If you are pregnant and try to quit but are unsuccessful then you may be able to use NRT to help, as it’s less risky for your developing baby than if you continue smoking. However, you should speak to your doctor before using nicotine gum during pregnancy or breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding and your doctor has told you to use Nicotinell gum, then you should try to breastfeed before using this product, as this will help your baby to take in the smallest amount of nicotine possible.

Can I use this product if I have diabetes?

If you have diabetes then you should monitor your blood glucose levels more often than usual while using this product. The amount of insulin or medication you need to use may change at this time, but you should discuss this with your doctor or healthcare team before making any changes.

Are there any age limits on this product?

Adolescents between the age of 12 – 18 should only use this product for 12 weeks. If 12 weeks have passed and you feel like you still need to use this product, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Children younger than 12 should not use this product unless advised to do so by a doctor.

Is there anything I shouldn’t eat or drink while I’m using this nicotine gum?

You should avoid drinking coffee, juices, acidic or fizzy drinks 15 minutes before chewing Nicotinell Gum. These drinks can reduce how much nicotine is absorbed into your system as you chew this gum and can make the product less effective.

How to use this product

When you feel the urge to smoke, chew one piece of gum until the taste becomes strong. Then hold the gum between your gum and your cheek until the taste fades and begin chewing again. Repeat this for around 30 minutes. When you’re finished with the piece of gum, wrap it in paper and dispose of it in a waste bin. Only chew one piece of gum at a time. Do not use more than 25 pieces of gum in one day. After around 3 months, you should try to gradually reduce the amount of gum you chew every day, and eventually finish using this product when you’re down to chewing 1 – 2 pieces of gum a day.

When should this nicotine gum not be used?

Nicotinell Gum is not suitable for children under the age of 12, unless advised otherwise by a doctor. Do not take this product if you are allergic to nicotine or any of the other listed ingredients. If you are taking any other medications, you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. This product is not suitable for non-smokers or occasional smokers. If you have problems with your jaw or wear dentures, you may have some difficulty chewing this gum. If this is the case for you then you may need to try a different kind of NRT, like patches, lozenges, or a spray. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you have:

  • Heart disease, including heart attack, worsening chest pain, disorders of the heart rate/rhythm
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure

Can quitting smoking cause any side effects?

As well as side effects caused by medication, quitting smoking in itself can cause unpleasant symptoms if you try to reduce your nicotine intake too quickly. These can be avoided by reducing your nicotine intake slowly over time. Some of the symptoms that can be caused by nicotine withdrawal include:

  • Craving cigarettes
  • Restlessness
  • Feeling irritable
  • Feeling tired
  • Difficulty falling asleep, insomnia
  • Feeling frustrated
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mouth ulcers
  • A chesty cough

These symptoms are usually signs that your body is adjusting to life without nicotine, and they will usually reduce and get easier to handle as you continue to give up smoking. If you’re worried about any symptom when you’re quitting smoking, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
