What is My Expert Midwife Prep Your Bits Perineal Massage Oil? 

My Expert Midwife Prep Your Bits Perineal Massage Oil is a softening and moisturising oil designed for a perineal massage, ideal from when you’re 34 weeks pregnant. Around 85% of women will sustain perineal trauma during a vaginal birth, so it’s important to practice a perineal massage to prevent any uncomfortable tears. 

This massage oil has been developed by midwives to help you prepare for your baby’s birth, and is perfect for encouraging the skin around your perineum to stretch more easily during childbirth. This award winning, mum approved perineal massage oil contains a unique blend of natural essential oils to help nourish, protect, and promote skin elasticity.

How to use this product

Ensure that you wash your hands before you use this product. Afterwards, sit comfortably and bring your knees together and towards your chest. Then open your knees like a book. You may find it easier to put one foot on the toilet/bath/stool in a similar way to how you would insert a tampon.

Next put a small amount of the massage oil onto your perineal. Using your thumbs, insert them into your vagina and then place your forefingers on the skin of your perineum.

You now need to stretch this skin gently by pressing downwards towards your anus and to the sides until you feel a slight burning, stretching sensation. Hold the stretch for 1 to 2 minutes. Massage the area between your thumb and fingers upwards and outwards and back again in a shape.

It’s recommended that you perform a perineal massage 3-4 times per week.

What essential oils are included in this product?

This massage oil contains a natural, soothing blend of essential oils including sweet almond oil to nourish and moisturise your skin, and avocado oil with omega-9 to promote and protect the skin’s integrity and health. Lavender oil calms and helps healing and regeneration, while eucalyptus leaf oil increases blood supply to the area. Lastly, grapeseed oil with vitamin e helps to minimise cell damage.

Why is a perineal massage important?

A perineal massage from when you’re 34 weeks pregnant has been clinically proven to help stretch the perineum (the area of skin that stretches during childbirth) to make it more elastic, therefore reducing the risk of tearing or the need for an episiotomy. It also helps to improve the chances of recovering sooner after birth.

When should this product not be used? 

You shouldn’t use this massage oil if you’re allergic to any of the ingredients. For external use only. Once opened, it can be used for 24 months. Seek emergency medical attention if you notice any signs of a severe allergic reaction, symptoms of which include swelling of the face and throat, skin rash, breathing difficulties and/or loss of consciousness. 

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date, referring to the last day of the month stated on the packaging.
