What is Lemsip Cough For Chesty Cough?

Lemsip Cough For Chesty Cough is a syrup that works to relieve the effects of a chesty cough. This is thanks to the active ingredient guaifenesin. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that works to loosen the amount of mucus that is caught in the chest, throat, and nose. This makes it easier to remove by coughing.

What causes a chesty cough?

Like with most coughs, it is usually caused by a virus, such as a cold or the flu. It can also be caused by an allergy. A chesty cough happens when more mucus is produced as a result of the infection. This excess causes it to become trapped in the airways and the body’s natural response is a cough in order to try and remove the mucus.

Who is this cough syrup suitable for?

This Lemsip linctus is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 12 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in the syrup. If you are diabetic, or intolerant to some sugars, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using. You should also consult a medical professional if you are on a sodium controlled diet, or using medication for any other condition.

Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use this medicine?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.

How should Lemsip Cough For Chesty Cough be used?

Use 10-20ml (2-4 5ml spoonfuls) of the syrup 3-4 times a day. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Do not use for more than 5 days and if symptoms do not improve after 5 days, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist.

Are there any side effects?

Like with many types of medicine, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Stomach upsets
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Allergic reactions, including skin rashes and blistering

If you notice any side effect, then stop using this medication and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
