How can I improve my quality of sleep?
Having good ‘sleep hygiene’ before you go to sleep can help to improve the quality of your sleep. Sleep hygiene is a series of habits that you implement before you go to sleep. If your sleep hygiene is poor, you are more likely to experience a poor quality of sleep. Good sleep hygiene practises include:
-
Going to sleep and waking at the same time every day
-
Relaxing at least 1 hour before bed e.g. taking a bath or reading a book
-
Ensure your bedroom is dark, quiet and has a comfortable temperature
-
Exercise regularly
-
Make sure your bed is comfy
-
Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol and caffeine at least 6 hours before bed
-
Eat at regular time and avoid eating big meals before bed
-
Turn off screens, including smart phones, tablets and televisions before going to bed
-
Avoid naps during the day
-
Do NOT sleep in after a bad night’s sleep - try to stick to a sleep schedule
