What causes dry skin on your hands?

Dry skin can appear when our hands cannot maintain moisture, resulting in roughness and dehydration. In extreme conditions, this can lead to skin cracking which can result in pain, bleeding or infection. Our hands are quite resilient against the elements, but excessive exposure to harsh weather or irritants in our environments. There are several factors that can cause dry skin on the hands including:

Dry air

Without a sufficient amount of humidity in the air, our skin can become dehydrated. When temperatures drop in winter so does the humidity level. Indoor heating can also remove moisture from the air.

Dehydration

Not keeping ourselves hydrated throughout the day can cause our blood volume can decrease, which can cause dry skin on hands. Drinking enough water every day ensures our body is hydrated and our skin stays soft and supple from the inside.

Excessive Hand Washing

Washing our hands strips our skin of its natural oils. Washing our hands frequently throughout the day can quickly cause our hands to become dry. Using lukewarm water and a cream-based hand wash that is soap-free to reduce the drying effects. Use hand cream liberally after washing hands to keep them hydrated.

Medications

Some medications, such as topical treatments for acne, can contain chemical exfoliants like, retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. These chemicals can severely dry out our skin, including our hands.

An underlying condition

There are a few medical conditions that can cause dry skin on our hands, including:

  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Psoriasis
  • Diabetes
  • Underactive thyroid gland

If you suspect your dry skin symptoms are caused by a medical condition, seek medical advice from GP or a Chemist 4 U pharmacist.

Your genes

There is research that suggests dry skin can be inherited. Gene mutations which control the production of proteins used to form and hydrate the skin’s barrier, can cause several drying skin conditions.

Why should we take care of our hands?

We know that moisturising our face and body is important to fight dry skin, replenish our skin’s protective barrier and keep our skin soft and supple, the same applies to our hands. We wash our hands many times a day and use them in many tasks which can take their toll on the skin on our hands. Using a hand moisturiser such as E45 Rich Hand Cream keeps them hydrated throughout the day and helps to prevent dry skin, cracks and irritation.

How does E45 Hand Cream work?

E45 Hand Cream is formulated with Evening Primrose Oil, a deeply nourishing ingredient to provide deep and long-lasting moisturisation. This luxuriously rich hand cream helps to lock and retain moisture within the skin for 24 hours. The lightweight formula is quickly absorbed by the skin for easy application. It contains no perfumes or colours that can irritate the skin and is dermatologically tested to be suitable for dry and sensitive skin.

What is Evening Primrose Oil?

Evening Primrose Oil is used in skincare and cosmetics to enhance lipid (our skin’s natural fats) content and increase hydration in our skin. Evening Primrose Oil can increase water retention and an improvement in the skin’s moisture levels. This hydration improves the skin barrier function which can have a soothing effect for dry, uncomfortable skin.
