How Condyline works
Podophyllotoxin is the active ingredient in Condyline solution, with a 0.5% strength, and it’s a plant extract that can be used to treat small clusters of genital warts. It works as an antimitotic, which means that it treats genital warts by blocking cell growth. This keeps warts from growing and developing until they disappear completely.
Directions
Before using this product, wash and dry your hands and the area of skin affected with warts carefully with soap and water. Dip the end of the included applicator stick into the bottle of solution until the hole in the stick is filled. Apply the solution directly to a wart and let it dry, cover all of your warts like this. You should not use more than 50 dips of solution at a time. When you’re done, wash your hands again. Begin this treatment in the morning and repeat it 12 hours later on the first day. After this, apply the treatment twice a day (once in the morning and once in the evening) for the next 2 days, for a total of 3 days of treatment. If your warts have not disappeared or improved after the first 3 days, speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice, they may wish for you to continue the treatment.
Side effects
Like all medications, podophyllotoxin can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:
- Inflammation in your foreskin and on the head of your penis
- Irritation of your vagina
- Mild irritation in your warts after you apply the solution, you may experience itching, burning, pain, redness, or skin ulcers
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction. If any of these symptoms are severe (e.g. swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, difficulty breathing, etc.) you seek immediate medical assistance

Warnings
Condyline solution is not suitable for use in children under the age of 12. Do not use this product if you are allergic to podophyllotoxin or any of the other listed ingredients. You should be aware that this medicine can cause systemic toxicity, which can affect the whole body. For external use only, avoid contact with eyes and other sensitive areas. You should not use this treatment on skin which is:
- Healthy
- Inflamed
- Bleeding
- On open wounds after an operation
Tell your prescriber during your initial consultation if you:
- Are female, as you should only use this treatment under close medical supervision
- Are male and have a lot of warts which cover an area that is 4cm squared (around the size of a postage stamp)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
You should not use Condyline during your pregnancy or if you’re breastfeeding. Some medications can affect your child or cause unwanted side effects for you during pregnancy, which is why they should be avoided. Unfortunately, genital warts can get worse during pregnancy, so we’d recommend speaking to your doctor or pharmacist about possible treatment options that will be safe for both you and your baby.
Other medication
If you’re taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or any other medication that you obtained without a prescription, you should tell your prescriber about this during your consultation. Some medications can interact when used together, causing unwanted side effects or making your medication less effective. You should not take Condyline if you are already taking any medication which contains podophyllin.

Will podophyllotoxin affect my contraception?
You shouldn’t have sex when you’re using any type of treatment for genital warts, including Condyline or other treatments containing podophyllotoxin.
If you use condoms as your primary method of contraception, you should be especially careful about using one alongside this treatment.
Some topical medications can affect the structure of condoms they come into contact with, making them more likely to break or less effective overall.
If you’re sexually active and want more information about how genital warts will affect your sex life and what you should do about it, we’d recommend speaking to your doctor or local sexual health clinic.
Can I have sex while I’m having genital warts treatment?
We do not recommend having any kind of sex when you’re having a flare-up of genital warts as the virus can easily be passed to your partner.
Therefore, you should not have sex while using this treatment, as it’s exclusively used when you have a genital wart outbreak.
However, if you do decide to have sex when you have warts, you should be sure to use a condom during intercourse and apply this treatment AFTER sex, not before.
You should also be aware that although using a condom during sex will help to reduce your chances of passing on genital warts, it will not prevent it entirely as any skin that is not covered by the condom can still transmit HPV.
What are genital warts?
Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a virus which is passed on through skin-to-skin contact and by sharing sex toys.
Genital warts look like small, round growths or lumps around your penis, vagina, or anus. They usually won’t hurt but they can be annoying and you may find them embarrassing or unsightly.
When you catch the virus that causes genital warts it will live in your skin, so you may not have your first outbreak of warts for weeks after your first contact and you may not ever show any physical symptoms.
When your warts have gone away you may find that they come back again later on, but you should note that you will still be infectious even if you don’t currently have any warts.
