What pain can Voltarol gel treat?
Voltarol can be used to treat a variety of aches and pains including:

There are a variety of reasons why you may experience pain in your back or muscles. For example, spending lots of time sitting in the office or poor posture can cause aches in your back, neck and shoulders. You may also be experiencing pain due to strain caused by exercise or sport. How can Voltarol help soothe aching muscles?
Many topical pain relief products tend to work by causing cooling or warming sensations in the skin. Voltarol Back and Muscle Pain Relief Gel is different as it contains the active ingredient Diclofenac which is part of a family of medicines known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS). Medicines such as Ibuprofen also belong to this group of drugs, which work by reducing inflammation and providing relief from pain. Diclofenac works by targeting the pain at it’s source to provide local relief. The powerful formula which contains Emulgel technology is applied directly to the skin and penetrates deep beneath the skin’s surface to help the Diclofenac reach the source of pain efficiently. Voltarol relieves pain by blocking the production of some chemicals produced by the body which cause swelling, pain and tenderness. Voltarol has a pleasant smell and won’t stain your clothing. The formula isn’t greasy or sticky and is easy to rub into the skin.
How to use this product
Always use this product exactly as described in the patient information leaflet.
To apply the gel, gently rub or massage a small amount of gel into the skin around the swollen or sore area. An amount around the size of a 1 or 2 pence piece will usually be enough to provide relief. Apply 3 - 4 times a day unless advised differently by your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist and allow at least 4 hours between applications.
Warnings
Do NOT apply this product more than 4 times in any 24 hour period. Speak to your doctor if the pain and swelling does not improve within 7 days. Do NOT use the gel for longer than 7 days, unless longer treatment has been recommended by a doctor. The gel is not recommended for use in children under the age of 14.
When NOT to use this product
Do NOT use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients (see ingredients tab for full list) or if you:
- Have ever had an allergic reaction to diclofenac or other medicines used to treat pain, fever or inflammation, such as aspirin or ibuprofen
- Are in the last 3 months of your pregnancy
- Are under 14 years of age
Take care when using this product and seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist, if necessary BEFORE using Voltarol in these circumstances:
- Do NOT apply the gel to skin that has a rash, eczema, cuts or open wounds - discontinue use if rash develops
- Avoid applying on large areas of skin over long periods of time unless advised to do so by a healthcare professional
- Take care when sunbathing or exposing yourself to UV rays as your skin may be more sensitive to sunlight
- Be careful when using in conjunction with products that contains other NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen or aspirin
- If you have a stomach or duodenal ulcer (or a history of either) tell your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist before using the gel
- If you have or have ever had asthma, seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist
- Do NOT smoke or go near naked flames after using this product
- If you are taking any other medication, including those obtained without a prescription, seek advice from your doctor or a Chemist4U pharmacist BEFORE using this product
Can Voltarol Pain Relief cause side effects?
Like all medications, Voltarol can cause side effects although not everyone will experience them. If you experience any of the following side effects, discontinue use immediately and seek advice from your GP:
- Wheezing
- Shortness of breath
- Feeling of tightness in the chest
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat
Common side effects that can be experienced but are usually harmless and will pass quickly include:
- Skin rash
- Itching
- Reddening
- Smarting of the skin
