Nystan Oral Suspension belongs to a group of medicines called antifungal antibiotics and is used to prevent and treat fungal infections (thrush) of the mouth, throat or gut. It also provides effective prevention against oral thrush in babies whose mothers have vaginal thrush. This medicine works by killing the yeast or fungus causing thrush symptoms.
Directions
Always use Nystan Oral Suspension exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. The recommended dose for adults and children is 1ml of suspension dropped into the mouth four times a day. In the case of newborn babies, the recommended dose is 1ml once a day dropped into the mouth. There are no specific dosage recommendations or precautions for older people.
Shake the bottle well before use. Use the measuring dropper provided, which is graduated in 0.5 ml steps. Doses should be equally spaced throughout the day. If you are taking this medicine for an infection in the mouth or throat, try not to swallow the suspension too quickly, as the longer the medicine is in contact with the site of infection the better.
What is oral thrush?
Oral thrush is a fungal infection caused by candida, otherwise known as yeast. There’s natural candida present in your mouth, but certain things can trigger an overproduction in yeast, resulting in you developing oral thrush.
Oral thrush can develop if you’re taking antibiotics, have an inhaler and poor oral hygiene; if you have a dry mouth, smoke and are on cancer treatment. Babies and elderly people will be at a higher risk of developing oral thrush due to their weakened immune system.
Is oral thrush contagious?
Oral thrush in adults isn’t contagious and can’t be passed on through close contact like kissing, for example. However, if your baby has come down with oral thrush and you’re breastfeeding, they can transfer it onto the mother to cause nipple thrush.
Side effects
Like all medicines, Nystan Oral Suspension may cause side effects in some people, but these won’t affect everybody. Large oral doses of this product may cause side effects like:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Bloating
- Stomach cramps
- Indigestion

Serious side effects

Nystan Oral Suspension may be unsuitable for certain people. Do not use this product if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Talk to your doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have any of the following:
- A fungal infection in the lungs or on the skin (systemic mycoses)
- You’re taking, or have recently taken, any other medicines
