What is MolluDab?

MolluDab is a treatment for the effects of the condition Molluscum Contagiosum, a viral infection. This treatment is applied to the skin to reduce the spots that appear on the skin as a result of the infection. The active ingredient of this treatment is 50mg potassium hydroxide. It works by breaking down skin cells that are affected by Molluscum Contagioscum and helps to build a defence against the virus. MolluDab is not suitable to be used for eczema or atopic dermatitis.

What is Molluscum Contagioscum?

Molluscum Contagioscum is a virus that can infect anyone, though it is more commonly found in children. The condition is shown by spots that appear on the skin. These spots have a small dimple in the middle of them. The spots average 2-5mm in size and can become red or swollen. They are not harmful but can be itchy. The virus itself is contagious and can spread through direct contact with someone infected. Molluscum Contagioscum can also be contracted as an STI. It is not known how long the condition lasts for but it can last for 18 months or longer.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

This topical treatment is suitable to be used by adults and children aged 2 and over. It should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients that are contained in the treatment. Anyone who is using any other form of medication should consult a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist before using.

Can anyone pregnant or breastfeeding use this treatment?

Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding should seek the advice of a medical professional before using this treatment.

How should MolluDab be used?

If you believe that you or your child have Molluscum Contagioscum, then go to a doctor to ensure that you have a correct diagnosis. When using Molludab, apply a small amount of the solution to the affected areas of the skin using the included spatula twice a day. Allow the solution to dry. MolluDab can be used for 14 days as treatment for Molluscum Contagioscum. It can take up to four weeks for the condition to heal fully when using the treatment. If the condition persists, consult a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist. Do not use four weeks after opening.

Are there any side effects?

Any side effect is likely to be the result of an allergic reaction. If you notice a side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record a side effect using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.

Do you need a prescription to buy MolluDab?

A prescription is not required to buy MolluDab and pharmacy approval is not required either. Before you buy MolluDab, ensure that the person you are intending to get MolluDab for does have Molluscum Contagioscum and not another type of skin condition.

Can this be used on the genital area?

Symptoms of molluscum contagiosum include pinkish or pearly white spots or papules on the skin which appear over a few weeks growing to 2mm to 6mm in diameter.

They are raised, dome-like and shiny, frequently occurring in groups. They differ from warts which have a rough surface and no central pore. Usually fewer than 20 spots are seen on an individual, but sometimes there may be as few as two or more than 20.

They can appear anywhere on the body except the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, and tend to form clusters. In children skin lesions usually appear on the trunk and in the flexures.

Sexual contact may result in lesions on the genitalia, lower abdomen and thighs. Lesions may be larger or more widespread in immunocompromised individuals. If the spots are around the with anogenital area, a doctor will need to be seen

Can this be used on the genital area? Thank you in advance

Molluscum contagiosum is a common and generally harmless condition that causes spots on the skin. It is most common in children and adolescents, but it can affect adults too. The condition tends to be more common and extensive in adults who suffer from atopic eczema. Sometimes people whose immune system is severely weakened due to a severe illness (such as HIV) or taking immunosuppressive treatment (such as chemotherapy) are more at risk of developing molluscum contagiosum.

How is molluscum contagiosum diagnosed in adults?

Any strange bumps on the skin should be examined by a healthcare provider, particularly if they appear in the genital area. Your GP or local sexual health clinic should be able to diagnose a molluscum infection based on a physical examination. Sometimes a biopsy of the bumps is necessary. This generally involves them being removed using a small scalpel

Can I use MolluDab to treat molluscum on the face or will it scar?
