What is a Suresign Digital Thermometer?

A thermometer is an essential addition to any first aid kit or medicine cupboard to help you keep an eye on your temperature when you come down with an infection. Suresign Digital Thermometer is easy-to-use, providing you with accurate results fast. This thermometer is suitable for all the family, and can be used to measure your temperature orally, rectally or from the armpit.

How to use this product

This thermometer is only intended to be used to measure temperatures orally, rectally or from the armpit. It should only be operated by persons aged 11 years and over. To use the thermometer orally, turn on the thermometer and place the flexible tip under the tongue. Close the mouth and breathe through the nose while the measurement is being taken. The thermometer will ‘beep’ 4 times to indicate the reading is complete.

To use under the armpit, turn on the thermometer and place the flexible tip in the armpit, placing the arm flat against the body. Ensure that there’s direct contact with skin. You should hold the thermometer in this position until you hear the ‘beep’, indicating that the measurement has been taken.

The most accurate and reliable method to take a temperature, especially in babies and young children, is rectally. To use, turn on the thermometer and gently insert the flexile tip 2-2.5cm into the rectum. If you’re taking the rectal temperature of a newborn baby, lay the baby on their back and lift their legs to an angle of approximately 90 degrees, holding their ankles to prevent them from moving while you’re taking their temperature. Once the thermometer has ‘beeped’, the measurement is complete.

When is a temperature considered high?

Everyone's normal body temperature will be different and it can change throughout the day. Usually, a high temperature is considered to be 38°C or above. This is sometimes referred to as a fever. A high temperature can be caused by many different things, but it’s typically caused by your body fighting an infection.

What is the difference between a digital thermometer and a mercury thermometer?

Mercury thermometers are the device that many people still think of when they picture a traditional thermometer. They’re made up of a glass tube with a line of mercury in the centre that moves up or down to show you your temperature. Digital thermometers are a more recent invention, but they’re far more accurate and are much quicker to use.

We would always recommend using a digital thermometer over a mercury thermometer when taking someone’s temperature. Mercury thermometers can be more likely to break, causing a risk of injury from glass splinters or exposure to mercury, which is highly poisonous.

When should I check my child's temperature?

If your baby feels hotter than usual on their forehead, back or stomach, or they’re feeling sweaty or clammy with flushed cheeks, you may need to check their temperature. The NHS recommends using a basic digital thermometer and placing it under their armpit for about 15 seconds, or for however long it says in the manufacturer’s instructions. This is the recommended way to take a child’s temperature until they’re 5 years old.

Storage information

Store in a cool, dry place out of sight and reach of children. If the thermometer is not being used for long periods of time, it’s recommended that you remove the battery to extend the battery life.
