What are Senokot 7.5mg Tablets for adults?

Senokot 7.5mg tablets are a constipation remedy for adults who need relief. These tablets use senna fruit pods to help your system to get things moving and encourage a bowel movement. If you’ve been struggling to poo or have found bowel movements uncomfortable or painful, Senokot tablets could help.

What causes constipation?

If you find that you’ve not been able to poo for a few days or that your poo is harder, larger, lumpier, or more difficult to push out than usual you may be constipated. Constipation is really common and you’ll probably experience it at least once in your lifetime, it’s nothing to worry about and will usually go away given a bit of time. However, constipation can make you feel bloated and uncomfortable, which is why some people use laxatives to help clear the blockage. Some of the most common reasons why you may have constipation include:

  • Not drinking enough water or fluids

  • Not getting enough fibre in your diet

  • Not being very active or not exercising as much as usual

  • A change in your diet or daily routine

  • Pregnancy

  • Some medications, such as codeine or morphine

  • Some medical conditions

How will Senokot 7.5mg relieve my constipation?

Senokot tablets each contain 7.5mg of senna, which comes from senna fruit pods. Senna is a popular stimulant laxative that works to relieve constipation by stimulating the muscles in your bowel. This helps to move built up poo through your system so you can have a bowel movement more easily and comfortably.

Can I take this laxative if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

You’ll probably experience constipation at least once during pregnancy, so finding a suitable way to manage it is important. Unfortunately, these tablets are not suitable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding, so you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist and ask them to recommend a different treatment. You should also consider whether your diet, fluid intake, and activity level are right for you, as these can all contribute to keeping you regular.

Can children take these tablets?

These Senokot 7.5mg tablets are not suitable for children and should only be taken be adults. If your child is constipated then you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist for advice. They’ll be able to recommend a more suitable treatment for kids and some lifestyle changed that can help to keep them regular.

Can I take this treatment if I’m taking other medications?

If you’re taking any other medications you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Senokot tablets. This especially applies if you are taking medicines for a heart condition, such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medicines like quinidine.

How to take these laxatives

Take 1 - 2 Senokot tablets when you go to bed at night with a sip of water. If you’re taking this product for the first time you should start with the lower dose of 1 tablet and increase to 2 if needed. You will usually only need to take this medicine up to 2 - 3 times a week, and should not take them for more then 1 week. If you don’t have a poo within 3 days of taking Senokot or find that your symptoms are getting worse you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist.

When should this product not be used?

Senokot tablets are not suitable for children. Do not take this product if you are allergic to senna or any of the other listed ingredients. This product is a laxative and cannot be used to help with weight loss. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you have an intolerance to some sugars, as these tablets contain lactose. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before using this product if you have kidney disorders. Do not take these tablets if you have:

  • A blockage or narrowing of your intestinal tract or bowel, e.g. ileus, intestinal obstruction, stenosis

  • Paralysis or lack of muscle tone in your bowel

  • Appendicitis or an inflammatory bowel disease, e.g. Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis

  • Severe dehydration

  • Persistent or undiagnosed abdominal complaints, e.g. pain, nausea, vomiting

  • Faecal impaction or rectal bleeding for which you do not know the cause, or blood in your poo

  • Already taken a laxative and are still constipated

  • Had a sudden change in your bowel habits which have lasted for more than 2 weeks

  • Kidney or heart failure

Does Senokot 7.5mg have any side effects?
