What are Rennie Peppermint tablets?

Rennie Peppermint tablets are antacids that work quickly and effectively to relieve the symptoms of heartburn, indigestion and upset stomach. These tablets contain calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.

What is the recommended dosage?

Adults and children over 12 should chew or suck on 2 tablets, as required, preferably 1 hour after meals and before bedtime. For heartburn, an extra 2 tablets may be taken between these times. You must not take more than 10 tablets in one day.

To maximise the benefit, take Rennie Peppermint 1-2 hours after any other medicines you are also taking. Avoid taking these tablets with large amounts of milk or dairy products.

How do the active ingredients in Rennie Peppermint tablets treat heartburn?

The active ingredients in Rennie Peppermint tablets are calcium carbonate (680mg) and magnesium carbonate (80mg). These ingredients work together to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion by neutralising excess stomach acid and turning it into water.

What is heartburn?

Heartburn and indigestion, also known as acid reflux, happens when stomach acid travels up into your oesophagus and throat, causing a burning sensation in your chest, a sour feeling in your stomach and/or an acidic taste in your mouth. Heartburn is very common and some of the possible causes can include:

  • Certain food and drink, such as spicy foods, chocolate, or caffeinated drinks
  • Being overweight
  • Smoking
  • Pregnancy
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Some medicines, such as anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen.
  • A hiatus hernia (when part of your stomach moves up into your chest)
  • GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease)

Can pregnant women take Rennie Peppermint tablets?

Yes, it’s safe to take Rennie Peppermint tablets if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, as long as you take them as instructed.

Are these tablets suitable for children?

No, children under 12 should not take Rennie Peppermint tablets. If your child has been experiencing heartburn symptoms for longer than 14 days, you should contact their doctor for advice.

When should Rennie Peppermint tablets not be taken?

Most adults and children over 12 are safe to take Rennie Peppermint tablets. You must not take Rennie Peppermint if you:

  • Have severe kidney disease
  • Have high calcium in the urine or kidney stones
  • Have high calcium or phosphate levels in the blood
  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients

It is best to take Rennie Peppermint tablets 1-2 hours after any other medicines to maximise the benefit of all medicines being used. Consult a doctor or Chemist4U pharmacist before taking these heartburn tablets if you take any of the following medicines:

  • Tetracyclines and quinolones (antibiotics)
  • Levothyroxine (a thyroid hormone)
  • Eltrombopag (used to increase the number of platelets)
  • Digoxin (used for some heart conditions)
  • Thiazide diuretics (water tablets to treat fluid retention and high blood pressure)
  • Fluorides (for preventing dental caries)
  • Phosphates (for clearing the bowel before a surgical procedure)
  • Iron supplements

As Rennie Peppermint contains sucrose and glucose, you should consult your doctor before use if you have been told you are intolerant to some sugars.

Are there any side effects?

As with all medicines, these heartburn tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. As long as you take the recommended dose as instructed, you’re unlikely to experience any side effects at all from Rennie Peppermint.

Rarely, allergic reactions have been reported. If you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction, stop treatment immediately and seek medical advice:

  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, mouth or throat
  • Anaphylactic shock (symptoms of which are low blood pressure, shock, palpitations, difficulty breathing, bronchospasm, skin reactions, abdominal pain or cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea)

Long term use in high doses can cause high blood levels of calcium and magnesium, especially in people with kidney conditions. Symptoms of this may include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhoea
  • Tiredness
  • Muscular weakness
  • Headache
  • Kidney problems
  • Impaired sense of taste

In exceptionally rare cases, long term use in high doses can lead to milk alkali syndrome, which can cause high blood levels of calcium.
