Zyban side effects and how to treat them

Zyban (bupropion) is a medication that is used to help people give up smoking. Whether it is your first time quitting, or you have been in this position before, Zyban tablets may be able to help you pack in the habit for good.

In the UK, Zyban is only available via a prescription, but just how effective is Zyban for quitting smoking, and what are the side effects of Zyban tablets?

This guide will talk you through everything you need to know when it comes to the side effects of this medication…

What is Zyban?

Zyban helps people to stop smoking by reducing cravings and other withdrawal symptoms. The medication was first developed to treat depression before it was found to help smokers stop smoking.

What are the most common side effects of Zyban?

Difficulty sleeping

Some people find that whilst they are using this medication, they experience sleeping problems or their current issues with sleep get worse.

It can make it more difficult for you to get to sleep, leading to insomnia. The medication might also lead to lower-quality sleep and more disruptions, including waking up throughout the night.

Trouble sleeping is one of the most common side effects reported. Clinical research has shown that 11% to 20% of people who have been prescribed Zyban experience difficulty sleeping.[1]

Feeling depressed

Feelings of depression have also been reported as a side effect of this tablet. If you already have existing mental health problems, this medication might worsen them.

Feeling anxious or agitated

Experiencing anxiety or feeling agitated whilst taking Zyban is another side effect.

Anxiety-related symptoms usually start shortly after beginning your treatment. The anxiety that is experienced may also come with panic attacks.

Some people will find that they are agitated, irritable or display other abnormal behaviours due to the medication. Agitation is the most common side effect.

Difficulty concentrating

When you are taking this medication, it may affect your concentration or judgement. You might find it more difficult to remain focused when it comes to certain tasks or activities.

Having trouble concentrating might impact your daily life. If you are struggling with your concentration you should avoid driving.

Feeling shaky (tremors)

Tremors or shakiness are possible side effects too. Tremors usually show up as shakiness in your hands and arms.

If you already suffer from tremors, you might find that they get worse when you start taking Zyban.

Headaches

You can experience headaches whilst taking the tablets. It is usually a mild side effect, however, some people might experience migraines.

Your headaches might come from high blood pressure, which is a more serious side effect of the medication.

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea is a common side effect that usually begins within the first week of starting the treatment.

Clinical trials reported that 22.9% of people taking Zyban experienced nausea and vomiting[2].

Stomach pain

You might also experience stomach pain as a side effect of Zyban. Stomach pain is typically caused by constipation.

If you have severe stomach pain or constipation you should talk to your healthcare provider.

Changes in the taste of food

Zyban can also cause a change in your appetite and a change in your sense of taste. You might start to dislike foods that you used to like or find that certain foods no longer taste the same.

Dry mouth

If you experience dry mouth whilst you are taking Zyban then it may be due to changes in your salivary glands.

Dry mouth is the second most common side effect of the medication.[2]

Fevers and sweating

You might experience fevers and sweating too, particularly night sweats.

Excessive sweating usually affects the scalp, face, neck and chest areas. Symptoms often develop in bursts.

Dizziness

Dizziness is another common side effect of Zyban. You might notice dizziness when you stand up or make sudden movements.

Skin rashes and itching

You may begin to notice some changes to your skin. Skin rashes, hives and itching are a possibility with this medication.

How to deal with difficulty sleeping

To limit issues with your sleep you should avoid taking your medication before bedtime. You should also try to get more exercise, but not right before you go to sleep.

Try to avoid bright lights including computer, phone and television screens before bed. You should also limit your caffeine intake after noon.

How to deal with feeling depressed

If you find that you are feeling depressed due to the medication, you should speak to your doctor or health care provider.

If you experience any thoughts of suicide or self-harm you must get help immediately.

How to deal with feeling anxious or agitated

Deep breathing exercises and yoga might help you with feelings of anxiety or agitation.

Regular exercise can also ease these symptoms.

How to deal with difficulty concentrating

When it comes to concentration, you can improve it by practising mindfulness and meditation.

You should also aim to eliminate distractions when you are focussing on something that requires you to concentrate.

How to deal with feeling shaky and tremors

If your tremors are caused by Zyban then it might be possible for your dose to be adjusted. If your tremors continue then your healthcare provider might talk to you about alternative treatments to help you quit smoking, such as using a nicotine patch or lozenges.

How to deal with headaches

If you find that you are suffering from headaches, the first thing you should do is try to relax. Stress can make your headaches worse.

You can try taking paracetamol or ibuprofen to help ease the pain.

How to deal with nausea and vomiting

If Zyban is causing you to vomit or feel nauseous you can try taking your medication with food. Eat small and frequent meals and remember to keep hydrated.

Try to get outside and get some fresh air, as it might help you with feeling sick.

How to deal with stomach pain

If your stomach pain is caused by constipation then you should try to increase your intake of high-fibre foods. You can also use fibre supplements.

Drinking plenty of water and exercising regularly can also help with stomach pain.

How to deal with the changes in the taste of food

If you notice that your food preferences change then you can avoid certain foods that you no longer like. You can also try different foods to figure out what you like and dislike.

How to deal with dry mouth

Drinking plenty of water can help you with dry mouth. Ice lollies, sugar-free chewing gum and sugar-free sweets might also be able to relieve the symptoms of dry mouth.

Limit your caffeine intake and do not drink a lot of alcohol as these drinks can make your dry mouth worse.

How to deal with fevers and sweating

Keeping the room at a comfortable temperature can help you if you are struggling with fevers or sweating. You should also wear loose-fitting clothes to minimise sweating.

There are certain foods and drinks you should avoid such as spicy foods and caffeine.

How to deal with dizziness

To avoid dizziness you should stay clear of caffeine, tobacco and alcohol. Practice standing up slowly. If necessary you can use other items for support.

Try to avoid making sudden movements to prevent dizziness.

How to deal with skin rashes and itching

Having cool or lukewarm showers and baths may help with itching. Your choice of clothing matters when it comes to avoiding irritation. Opt for loose cotton or silk clothing to help minimise the risk of skin irritation.

Will the side effects get worse if I continue taking Zyban tablets?

As your body adjusts to the medication you might begin to notice that the side effects go away. If you are still struggling with the side effects during the treatment, then you should talk to your pharmacist or GP.

Are there any severe side effects of Zyban tablets?

Chest pain

You might experience chest pain or discomfort. This is a serious side effect, and if you are experiencing tightness in the chest it can also be a sign of an allergic reaction.

Fainting

If you experience fainting or feeling faint when you stand up, this could be due to your blood pressure falling.

Memory loss

Sometimes Zyban can affect cognitive functions such as your memory. It is uncommon, however, some people do experience significant memory loss from the medication.

Allergic reaction

An allergic reaction is a serious side effect. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include skin rashes, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, trouble breathing and chest pain.

Extreme weight loss

Whilst weight loss is not uncommon if you are taking Zyban, it can be worrying if you lose a substantial amount of weight. The medication can cause a change in eating habits which can lead to weight loss, however, the weight loss should not be significant.

What should I do if I experience severe side effects?

If you experience any severe side effects from taking Zyban you should stop taking the medication straight away and seek medical attention.

When you start taking Zyban it is normal to experience some side effects. The side effects will be different for each person, but they should begin to ease once your body adjusts to the medication.
