What are head lice?
Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that can live on human hair and feed on the blood from the scalp. If you have a head lice infestation you may experience an itchy scalp, however due to their tiny size they may be hard to spot until there are many present in the hair. Although they are a nuisance, head lice do not pose a serious health risk and are usually easy to treat. Head lice and nits are a common problem for young children and their families as they are easily spread through head to head contact. Adult head lice typically grow to around 3mm in length and a typical infestation can consist of around 30 head lice, however it is possible to have more than 1000 lice in your hair if the infestation is severe.
How do head lice spread?
It is a myth that head lice can only be found in hair that is unclean, however this isn’t accurate. Head lice can be spread to hair that is in any condition, but they are most commonly found in the hair of young children, especially those who have long hair. Lice cannot jump, fly or swim, so they can only spread through head to head contact with a person who has a lice infestation. It can take just half a minute for a head louse to crawl from one head to another. It is extremely unlikely to develop a lice infestation from sharing hats, brushes, combs or pillows as head lice can’t survive for long once they are removed from your head, as they no longer have a food supply. However it is recommended as a precaution that you avoid sharing personal items if you have an infestation.
Are nits the same as head lice?
The terms nits and head lice are often used interchangeably to describe the insect, however they are not the same thing. Head lice multiply through attaching eggs to your hair with a glue-like substance, which is excreted by females as they lay. Head lice eggs can hatch within a week and leave behind the empty white egg cases which are called nits. If you see nits in your hair after using a treatment, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you still have an active head lice infestation (live head lice in your hair), as the empty egg cases can remain stuck in your hair after the lice have been removed.
How does Full Marks Head Lice Treatment remove head lice?
Full Marks Head Lice Treatment contains the active ingredient cyclomethicone and isopropyl myristate which kills the lice through dehydrating them. The caring formula does not contain any pesticides to reduce the chance of the lice becoming resistant to treatment and does not have an overwhelming odour. Full marks removes both the live lice and the eggs. This pack contains 6 treatments and a comb for your convenience. The formula is suitable for children aged 2 years and over, including children who have asthma and sensitive skin.
