How does Fleet Enema relieve the symptoms of constipation?

This treatment is designed to administer yourself and is used to cleanse the bowels. Fleet enema works by increasing water content in your stools.

This medicine acts as a laxative to provide effective treatment within 2 to 5 minutes of taking. It is suitable for the relief of occasional constipation.

By acting as a bowel cleanser, fleet will allow you to pass stools freely without stomach pains or feeling the need to force.

What should I keep in mind when taking Fleet Enema?

Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to any of the active ingredients, which include:

  • Sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate
  • Disodium phosphate dodecahydrate

Also, do not take if:

  • You have a swollen large bowel (megacolon)
  • There is a narrowing or incomplete opening of the anus or rectum
  • You have a blockage of the lower colon
  • Have suspected gut blockage

Talk to your doctor before using if:

  • You are elderly or frail, assistance may be needed from a healthcare professional before using this medicine
  • You have uncontrolled blood pressure
  • You suffer from a kidney or heart problem

Using other medicines with Fleet Enema:

Always tell your doctor about the other medicines you are currently, recently or might be taking, even those that have been purchased without a prescription, especially:

  • Medicines that treat high blood pressure
  • Diuretics, medicines used to empty the bladder
  • Lithium
  • Medicines that may dehydrate you

Can I use Fleet Enema if pregnant?

The main ingredient in this treatment may pass into your breast milk. We recommend that if you do use this treatment that any breast milk should be discarded for at least 24 hours after using Fleet.

You should consult your doctor or another healthcare professional before taking this medicine.

How to take:

  1. Wash your hands before use, and use disposable gloves if you have them
  2. Lie on your left-hand side with both knees bent, and your arms at rest in front of you
  3. Remove the orange protective shield. Pull the shield gently while holding the bottle upright and grasping the grooved bottle cap with your fingers
  4. Gently insert the enema Comfortip into the rectum with the tip pointing towards your navel
  5. Squeeze the bottle until nearly all the liquid has been emptied

If rectal bleeding is noticed, discontinue use immediately and contact your doctor.

Within 5 minutes of using, you will experience frequent bowel movements, this shows that the medicine is working. If you do not experience this, contact your doctor.

If you take more than you should, speak to your doctor immediately as you may become very dehydrated.

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, for example:

  • Water
  • Clear soups
  • Herbal tea
  • Diluted cordial

Will I experience side effects when I take this medicine?

Very rarely (1 out of 10,000 people) Fleet may cause side effects, although not everyone gets them, they are listed below:

  • Allergic reactions (with or without rash)
  • Dehydration
  • Muscle twitches
  • Pains in the abdominals
  • Vomiting
  • Anal itching, stinging, pain or discomfort
  • Blisters
  • Diarrhoea
  • Chills
