What are Emergency Contraceptive Richter tablets?

Emergency Contraceptive Richter tablets are a type of morning after pill that uses an active ingredient called levonorgestrel to prevent unwanted pregnancy. If you think that you may have unprotected sex, you can buy these tablets in advance to help to keep you from falling pregnant. Just take the tablet within 72 hours of having sex so it can get to work helping to protect you from unwanted pregnancy.

What is emergency contraception (the morning after pill)?

Emergency contraception, which is also called the morning after pill, is a type of contraception that can be used after having unprotected sex. It helps to keep you from falling pregnant if you forget to use other types of contraception, or if your regular contraception fails (for example, your condom breaks). Emergency contraceptive pills are available over the counter without a prescription, so you can pick one up when you need it and take it as soon as possible after having unprotected sex.

Why would I buy the morning after pill in advance?

When you need to use the morning after pill, you should use it as soon as you can after having sex. This is why we recommend buying the morning after pill in advance and keeping one in a safe place, so you can take it as soon as you think you need it. Unprotected sex may not be planned, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared to prevent unwanted pregnancy when you need to.

Should I buy emergency contraception online if I’ve had unprotected sex recently?

If you’ve had unprotected sex recently and need emergency contraception we would recommend buying yours from a local pharmacy or speaking to your local family planning clinic. It’s very important to take the morning after pill as soon as you can after having unprotected sex, and waiting for the delivery of an online order will only cause an unnecessary delay in this process. Although we do sell emergency contraception online, we’d recommend using our services to buy the product in advance, so you can have one at home just in case you ever need it.

How does levonorgestrel work to prevent unwanted pregnancy?

Levenorgestrel 1500mcg is the active ingredient in Emergency Contraceptive Richter tablets. It is thought to work to prevent pregnancy by either keeping your ovaries from releasing an egg or keeping the sperm from fertilising an egg which is already released. This is why it’s so important to take this product as soon as you can after having unprotected sex, as it can help the tablet to be as effective as possible when preventing fertilisation.

How long after having unprotected sex can I take this product?

You should take Emergency Contraceptive Richter within 72 hours (3 days) of having unprotected sex. For best results, we’d recommend taking the tablet within 12 hours of having sex, as the sooner you can take it the more effective it will be. You can take this emergency contraceptive at any point during your menstrual cycle, so don’t worry about when you’re due to have your period and just take the tablet as soon as you can.

How often can I take Emergency Contraceptive Richter?

Emergency Contraceptive Richter should not be used as a regular method of contraception, but to prevent pregnancy if you have unprotected sex. The emergency contraceptive pill is not as reliable as other forms of regular contraception, so if you are planning on having sex regularly, we’d recommend asking your doctor, nurse, or local family planning clinic to recommend a method of contraception that will be right for you.

Do I need to use other contraceptives after I’ve taken this product?

Taking the emergency contraceptive pill will not prevent you from falling pregnant if you have unprotected sex after taking it. Therefore, you will need to use your other usual forms of contraceptives to prevent pregnancy after taking this product. For example, you could use the contraceptive pill or male or female condoms until you have your next period. After this, you may wish to speak to your doctor or nurse about choosing a more long-term method of contraception, such as the implant or an IUD.

Can I take this product if I’m pregnant or breastfeeding?

If you’re pregnant or think you may be pregnant you should not take the morning after pill. If you do find out that you’re pregnant after taking this product, speak to your doctor right away so they can check that the pregnancy is not ectopic. If you’re breastfeeding you can still take the morning after pill if your doctor or pharmacist has told you that you’re safe to do so. Small traces of the active ingredient in this tablet may appear in your breastmilk, which will not harm your baby but may be something you wish to avoid. In this case, we’d recommend breastfeeding or expressing milk immediately before taking this product and then avoid nursing for at least 8 hours afterwards. This will help to reduce the amount of levonorgestrel in your breastmilk as much as possible.

Will taking the morning after pill affect my fertility in future?

There is currently no data to suggest that your fertility will be affected in the long term by taking Emergency Contraceptive Richter. However, taking this product can affect your menstrual cycle, making you ovulate earlier or later than you usually would. This can affect your chances of getting pregnant if you track your ovulation cycle and try to have sex at times when you’re at your most fertile.

Can I drive after taking this tablet?

You may find that you feel tired or dizzy after taking Emergency Contraceptive Richter. If this happens to you, do not attempt to drive or use any tools or machinery until the feeling has passed and you are absolutely sure that you are safe to do so.

Can I take this product if I’m taking any other medication?

If you’re taking any other medication, including herbal remedies or medicines obtained without a prescription you should speak to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this emergency contraceptive pill. This especially applies if you are already taking:

  • Barbiturates or other medications used to treat epilepsy, e.g. primidone, phenytoin, carbamazepine

  • Medicines used to treat tuberculosis, e.g. rifampicin, rifabutin

  • Treatments for HIV, e.g. ritonavir, efavirenz

  • Griseofulvin, which is used to treat fungal infections

  • Herbal remedies which contain St John’s wort

  • Cyclosporin, which suppresses your immune system

Take one Emergency Contraceptive Richter tablet as soon as you possibly can after having unprotected sex. For best results, take within 12 hours of having sex and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after having sex. Swallow the tablet with a sip of water or another cool drink.

What should I do if I’m sick after taking this tablet?

If you’re sick (vomit) within 3 hours after taking this tablet then the first tablet probably will not work. You should speak to your doctor, pharmacist or local sexual health clinic immediately and ask for a second tablet, which you can take straight away. If you ever at all concerned that the tablet may not have worked, speak to your doctor or pharmacist right away.

When should this product not be used?

Emergency Contraceptive Richter should not be taken by children under the age of 16 unless they are under medical supervision. Do not take this product if you are allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other listed ingredients. Do not take this tablet if you:

Will the emergency contraceptive pill affect my period?

You will usually have a normal period after taking Emergency Contraceptive Richter, but please be aware that is can sometimes affect your period as it can make you ovulate earlier or later than you usually would. However, if your period is more than 5 days late or is unusually light or heavy you should see a doctor as soon as possible and get a check-up.
