What are Babystart FertilTests?

Babystart FertilTests are a combination pack of the Babystart FertilCount and FertilCheck home testing kits for both male and females. These effective, easy-to-use screening tests enable couples to determine their fertility potential in the comfort and privacy of their own home.

Included for him is a sperm testing kit that measures whether the sperm concentration is below or above the minimum fertility standard of 15 million per millilitre of semen. Included for her is a test for women that works by detecting raised levels of the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in urine, which can be an indication of reduced ovarian reserve. This product contains 2 female tests and 2 male tests.

How to use Babystart FertilCheck Female Fertility Test

Always use Babystart FertilCheck Female Fertility Test exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. To use, hold the test in your urine stream or dip the absorbent tip of the test vertically into the urine collected into a clean, dry container for 10 to 15 seconds.

If testing in your urine stream, it should be done midstream meaning that you pass some urine before you place the test in the stream. Replace the cap and lay the test flat with the windows facing upwards and wait 5 minutes before reading the results. Do not read the results after 10 minutes.

Reading your results is simple. A positive result is indicated by the presence of two red lines, one in the test window and one in the control window. The line in the test window must be the same or darker red than the line in the control window. A positive result may suggest that your fertility is reduced. If you get a positive result, we recommend that you discuss this with your doctor who will be able to carry out further tests.

A negative result is indicated by either the presence of two red lines where the line in the test window is a lighter red than the line in the control window or when there is no line in the test window at all. A negative result suggests that you are fertile. The result is invalid if no red line appears in the control window, even if a line appears in the test window. If this happens, you should repeat the test.

How does Babystart FertilCheck Female Fertility Test work?

This fast and reliable test works by detecting raised levels of the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) in urine – an indication of reduced ovarian reserve. In other words, this test can provide an insight into how fertile you are.

How to use Babystart FertilCount Male Infertility Test

Always use Babystart FertilCount Male Infertility Test exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor / Chemist4U pharmacist has told you. Start by collecting a semen sample. The semen sample may be collected by masturbating directly into the plastic liquefaction cup provided. Once the semen sample is in the plastic cup, place the lid on the cup and gently swirl the contents 10 times around the cup. Wait at least 15 minutes but no longer than 12 hours before testing the sample. Just before testing, swirl the cup contents around several times more.

Open the resealable pouch by tearing or cutting at the notches. Remove the contents and place the test cassette on a flat surface with the sample wells facing upwards. Swirl the plastic cup before removing the lid. Hold and squeeze the plastic dropper at its midpoint. Place the angled tip into the semen sample and release the pressure slowly. As you do this semen will be drawn into the dropper.

By gently squeezing the dropper add ONE drop of semen to Test Well ‘T’. Let the drop soak in for at least one minute. Then add TWO drops of BLUE solution to the same Test Well ‘T’. Let the drops soak in for at least one minute. Finally, add TWO drops of CLEAR solution to Test Well ‘T’. Let the drops soak in for at least one minute.

Reading the result is simple. If the test result is positive, meaning your sperm count is equal to or greater than 15 million per millilitre of semen, the colour in Test Well ‘T’ will be the same as or greater than Reference Well R. If the test result is negative, meaning your sperm count is less than 15 million per millilitre of semen, the colour in Test Well ‘T’ will be less than the colour in Reference Well ‘R’.

If you are unsure about your test results, take a second test. The second test should not be repeated until at least 3 days later but not more than 7 days after the first test. If both tests are positive then your sperm count is equal to or greater than 15 million per millilitre of semen. However, if either or both of the tests were negative then you should consult your doctor about having a full semen analysis performed.

How can I increase my chances of conceiving?

If you’re trying for a baby, there are a few things you can do that can increase your chances of conceiving. You should aim to have sex every 2 - 3 days or around the time that you’re ovulating (about 12 - 16 days before your period starts, but you can take an ovulation test for a more accurate reading). You should also try to maintain a healthy weight, stop smoking and reduce your alcohol intake.

When does your fertility decrease?

A woman’s fertility is at its highest between the late teens and late 20s. Once you reach 30, your ability to get pregnant can start to decline, and it will typically decline more rapidly once you reach your mid-30s (around age 35). By 45, it will usually be very difficult for you to become pregnant naturally.

Who should get their sperm tested?

If you and your partner are thinking about or currently trying for a baby, it can be helpful to know if there’s a problem at the start. Men (and women) can do a fertility test, like a sperm test, that’s quick, simple and allows you to perform the test in the privacy of your own home.

How do sperm tests work?

Sperm testing kits work in a similar way as a pregnancy test, but instead of urine, you’ll use semen as the sample. There will either be lines to show the result or in the case with Babystart, the testing kit will be stained blue - the darker this colour, the higher your sperm count.

Are home sperm tests accurate?

A home testing kit can give you an idea if something isn’t right, but it can’t give you the most accurate insight into your sperm health - to do that, you’d need to visit a professional. Sperm testing kits have a high accuracy rate of detecting one factor - how much sperm you have and whether that level is considered normal. But there are other reasons that can cause infertility, like the sperm’s shape, movement and how many are alive.

Does a low sperm count mean infertility?

No, you can still conceive naturally, but it might be more difficult. A low sperm count is known as oligozoospermia, which is where a man has less than 15 million sperm per millilitre of semen. To put this into perspective, an average man will have around 15 - 200 million sperm per millilitre of semen.
