What are Alka-Seltzer XS 20 Effervescent Tablets?

Alka-Seltzer Effervescent Tablets are a treatment for pain relief that works to treat a headache, migraine, toothache, sore throat, heartburn, indigestion and more. These tablets contain three active ingredients that work to provide relief. These are:

  • Aspirin
  • Paracetamol
  • Caffeine

Aspirin and paracetamol are both painkillers, with aspirin being what is known as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which are used to reduce pain and inflammation. Paracetamol can also be used to reduce fever. Caffeine is an ingredient that works as a mild stimulant and can also improve the effectiveness of paracetamol as a painkiller.


What causes indigestion?

Indigestion can be caused by several different conditions. The majority of cases involving indigestion (dyspepsia) involves eating food and drink and that causing the problems. Indigestion is felt by several symptoms, which include:

  • Heartburn/acid reflux
  • Feeling full and bloated
  • Nausea
  • Belching and passing wind
  • Bringing up food

There are other causes of indigestion which involve certain types of medication, smoking and alcohol.


Who are these Alka-Seltzer XS Tablets suitable for?

These tablets are suitable for adults and children aged 16 and over. They should not be used by anyone who is allergic to the ingredients contained in them. They should also not be used if any of the following apply to you:

  • Are allergic to any other NSAIDs
  • Have a disorder such as haemophilia, which causes excessive bleeding
  • Have, or in the past had, a stomach ulcer
  • Are taking a high dose of methotrexate, 15mg or more

If you are using any other type of medication, speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U before using.


Can someone who is pregnant or breastfeeding use these tablets?

These tablets should not be used by anyone pregnant or breastfeeding unless advised to do so by a doctor.


How should Alka-Seltzer XS 20 Effervescent Tablets be used?

Take 2 tablets and dissolve them in a 100ml glass of water. Take every 4 hours as required. Do not exceed taking 8 tablets in 24 hours.


Are there any side effects?

Like with many medicines, there is a chance of side effects. Potential side effects include:

  • Difficulty swelling or breathing
  • Skin Rashes
  • Itching
  • Stomach bleeding
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

If you notice any side effect, stop using and speak to a doctor or Chemist 4 U pharmacist as soon as possible. You can also record any side effect that you notice using the MHRA Yellow Card Scheme.
