What happens when you get an insect bite?
When you get an insect bite or sting a small red lump will often form in your skin. This is harmless and will usually clear within a couple of days, but it can be itchy and irritating. Sometimes, bites can become infected or the person who received the bite can have a mild allergic reaction, which can mean that the bite takes longer to heal.
How does Savlon Bites and Stings Gel relieve insect bites?
Savlon Bites and Stings Gel contains three ingredients which work to relieve insect stings and bites. These three ingredients are:
- Lidocaine hydrochloride 2%
- Zinc Sulphate 1%
- Cetrimide 0.5%
Lidocaine is a local anaesthetic, which works to relieve pain, itching, and irritation in your bite or sting. Zinc sulphate and cetrimide work together to protect the skin around your bite from becoming infected, using their properties as an astringent and as a disinfectant to tackle bacteria.
Does Savlon help mosquito bites?
Savlon Bites and Stings gel can be used on mosquito bites, as it’s suitable for all insect bites and stings. However, we’d always recommend avoiding mosquito bites wherever possible as they can be responsible for the spread of disease in certain areas. If you’re concerned about mosquito bites, make sure you wear tops with long sleeves and long trousers, covering as much of your skin as possible, and use a reliable insect repellent on areas you can’t cover with clothing.
How to use this product
Apply a small amount of Savlon Bites and Stings Gel to the bite or sting using a clean fingertip. Apply gel to the affected area 3 – 4 times a day as necessary.
When should this product not be used?
Savlon Bites and Stings Gel is not suitable for use on children under the age of 12. This product is not recommended for use on animal bites. Do not use this product if you are allergic to lidocaine hydrochloride, zinc sulphate, cetrimide, or any of the other listed ingredients. This product contains propylene glycol which may cause skin irritation. For external use only, keep out of contact with eyes or other sensitive areas.
Does Savlon Bites and Stings Gel have any side effects?
Like all medications, Savlon Bites and Stings Gel can have side effects, although not everyone will experience them. These include:
- Skin irritation
- Skin sensitisation

How to store this product
Store in a cool, dry place which is below 30 degrees C. Do not use this product if the expiry date printed on the original packaging has passed. Once opened use within 3 months. Keep out of sight and reach of children.
